Dear Eric: A friend of mine is a lovely woman, and a real animal lover. The problem is that she lives near some woods and feeds the wild animals that come to her yard. I’m not talking about just putting out a bird feeder, but she feeds opossums, raccoons, deer and other creatures, and gets a lot of pleasure out of doing so. It is not recommended that anyone feed wild animals in this way. It is bad for the animals and for you, for lots of reasons. This week a black bear came up to her back door, putting…
Gov. Jared Polis on Monday signed a bill into law that will increase the number of young people Colorado can hold in pre-trial detention facilities. Current law allows the state to detain up to 215 teens at any one time. House Bill 1146 increases that number to 254 in the next fiscal year. In subsequent years, a formula will determine the maximum bed count, based on the average daily population. The bill also removes the most serious type of felony charges from counting toward the cap, and creates 39 emergency beds that wouldn’t count toward the total bed cap. The…
Today is Tuesday, June 3, the 154th day of 2025. There are 211 days left in the year. Today in history: On June 3, 1943, an altercation between U.S. Navy sailors and young Mexican Americans on the streets of Los Angeles led to several days of clashes known as the Zoot Suit Riots, during which white mobs attacked Mexican Americans across the city, injuring more than 150. Also on this date: In 1844, the last confirmed specimens of the great auk were killed on Eldey island, near Iceland. In 1888, the poem “Casey at the Bat” by Ernest Lawrence Thayer…
Let Biden live out his days in peace Re: “Democratic leaders must reckon with the Biden coverup,” May 25 commentary I am angry at Doug Friednash and furious at Jake Tapper. Joe Biden is no longer president and has now been diagnosed with late-stage prostate cancer. Do we need to beat a dead horse? I recently asked a friend, “What purpose is Jake Tapper’s tell-all book about Biden except to enrich his own wallet and time in the spotlight?” I will not read his book, and it is terrible to demean and ridicule a man who served in the public…
United Auto Workers members in Orlando and Denver have ratified a new five-year contract with Lockheed Martin, ending a month-long strike that involved more than 900 employees at the defense and aerospace giant. “This was a hard fight,” said Brandon Campbell, director of UAW Region 4, in a news release. “Lockheed was determined to hold onto every cent of the $24 billion it made during the last three years. But UAW members stood up to win our fair share of the profits that we generate. That raises the standard for workers everywhere.” Under the new agreement, workers will receive pay…
Colorado’s overcast skies will turn into widespread rain across metro Denver with a chance of severe thunderstorms, large hail and a tornado on the Eastern Plains, National Weather Service forecasters said Monday. Rain will start falling on the Front Range and Eastern Plains at around 3 p.m., increasing to an 80% or greater chance of precipitation for communities from Longmont to Castle Rock and Breckenridge to Julesburg by 9 p.m., forecasters said Monday morning. “A few strong to severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon and evening, especially across the far northeast plains,” forecasters with the NWS Boulder office wrote. “Large…
Renck: The Nuggets’ season expired in the second round for the second straight year, and the posture of boss Josh Kroenke thus far is to follow former general manager Calvin Booth’s plan. Blend in young players with a core four that the franchise wants to keep together longer than the Beatles. Contrast that with the Avs, who were given permission to execute an HGTV makeover … only to result in a first-round exit. Sean, who is in a worse position to maximize their championship window moving forward? Keeler: The Nuggets were playing with house money last month. The Avalanche bet…
For a moment, Jonah Elliss hoped for the best. Physics suggested otherwise. In the first quarter of Denver’s playoff loss to Buffalo in January, the Broncos’ rookie outside linebacker was tasked with setting the edge on a Bills third-and-3. Buffalo left tackle Dion Dawkins pulled around to the right side of Buffalo’s formation, the 6-foot-5, 320-pounder building a head of steam. Elliss braced for impact, lowering his shoulder in a way that caused it to absorb most of the crushing impact. He grabbed at his right shoulder immediately and went to the sideline, hoping for the pain to subside. Elliss…
The man accused of injuring 12 people on Boulder’s Pearl Street Mall with a “makeshift flamethrower” and Molotov cocktails spent more than a year planning the “targeted act of violence” against a group calling for the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza, law enforcement officials said Monday. Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, intended to carry out a mass shooting in downtown Boulder and only switched to an explosive plan after he was denied a gun because of his immigration status, county investigators said in an arrest affidavit. Mohamed Sabry Soliman was booked into Boulder County Jail late Sunday night on suspicion…
By Beth Dooley, The Minnesota Star Tribune (TNS) Simply translated, masa — the foundation for every perfect tortilla, tostada, tamale, pozole, arepa and gordita — means dough. It unites North and South America, defying any one cultural identity. Masa is made from field corn, which is quite different from the tender sweet corn we eat off the cob. The kernels are nixtamalized — cooked in an alkaline solution, often water and lime — and then drained and ground into dough. It’s used fresh or dehydrated to make masa harina, which resembles corn flour and cornmeal. Nixtamalization intensifies the corn’s flavor,…
