By Brad Townsend, The Dallas Morning News AUGUSTA, Ga. — At 9:10 a.m. Dallas time, Scottie Scheffler strode from the practice putting green, a crane-mounted camera hovering above and patrons massed around the first tee box, awaiting his arrival. The golf world wondered whether Dallas’ Scheffler will make history here this week. If anything, his 4-under 68 in Thursday’s first round of the 89th Masters reinforced his recent dominance here and heightened his chances of repeating as champion. He bombed in birdie putts of 62 feet on No. 4 and 42 feet on No. 16 during a bogey-free round that…

By CORA LEWIS and MARY CLARE JALONICK NEW YORK (AP) — The House voted Wednesday to overturn a rule that would have limited bank overdraft fees to $5, following the Senate in moving to dismantle the regulation that the Biden administration had estimated would save consumers billions of dollars. The resolution killing the rule, which passed the House 217-211, will now head to the White House for President Donald Trump’s signature. Republicans argued that the “disastrous” regulation issued in the final days of President Joe Biden’s term would have forced banks to stop offering overdraft protection altogether and made it…

Denver police Detective Donald Young (Photo courtesy of Denver Police Department) Colorado prison officials will not allow a man convicted of killing a Denver police officer 20 years ago to enter a program that could make him eligible to seek an early release, a prison spokeswoman confirmed Thursday. Raul Gomez-Garcia, 39, drew outrage last month when he applied to participate in a three-year prison program for people convicted of crimes as juveniles and young adults. If he were accepted to and completed the program, which focuses on building life skills, he would have been eligible to apply for early parole.…

By CHRISTOPHER RUGABER and ANNE D’INNOCENZIO, AP Business Writers WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s new tariffs threaten to push up prices on clothes, mobile phones, furniture and many other products in the coming months, possibly ending the era of cheap goods that Americans enjoyed for about a quarter-century before the pandemic. In return, White House officials hope the import taxes create more high-paying manufacturing jobs by bringing production back to the United States. It is a politically risky trade-off that could take years to materialize, and it would have to overcome tall barriers, such as the automation of most…

Colorado will not comply with a federal order to certify that the state’s K-12 school districts are following civil rights law and eliminating what the Trump administration says are illegal diversity, equity and inclusion practices, Education Commissioner Susana Córdova said Thursday. The U.S. Department of Education sent a letter to state education departments on April 3 threatening to pull federal funding from public schools over such programs. States were given 10 days to sign and return the notice, but multiple states, including New York and Minnesota, have said they won’t comply with the order. Córdova said during a meeting of the…

Nathan MacKinnon will not play Thursday night for the Colorado Avalanche and may miss the final three games of the regular season while dealing with a minor injury. MacKinnon has missed several practices and morning skates lately. That has been part of his routine in recent seasons to help him stay fresh for the Stanley Cup Playoffs. “He’s dealing with something,” Avs coach Jared Bednar said. “I think you get to this point in the year, all these guys are dealing with something. The guys who didn’t get the break for the Four Nations, this has been a tough stretch…

By JAKE OFFENHARTZ NEW YORK (AP) — Facing a deadline from an immigration judge to turn over evidence for its attempted deportation of Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil, the federal government has instead submitted a brief memo, signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, citing the Trump administration’s authority to expel noncitizens whose presence in the country damages U.S. foreign policy interests. The two-page memo, which was obtained by The Associated Press, does not allege any criminal conduct by Khalil, a legal permanent U.S. resident and graduate student who served as spokesperson for campus activists last year during large demonstrations against Israel’s treatment of Palestinians…

The yearslong fight over the permanent home of U.S. Space Command — currently in Colorado Springs but in danger of being moved to Alabama — kicked into a higher gear Thursday, as the state’s Republican members of Congress said the battle was hardly over. “We’re not waiting to make our case,” U.S. Rep. Jeff Crank said in an early morning video call with reporters. “We’re making our case and we’re doing it right now. We’re going to continue to fight — it makes sense that it be in Colorado. It’s already in Colorado.” Crank is a freshman who represents the…

Starting pitching had been the Rockies’ saving grace in their otherwise awful start to the season. But there was nothing redeeming about their 17-2 loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday night at Coors Field. Right-hander Antonio Senzatela got rocked, the offense continued to sputter, they committed four errors, and their 2-9 record is tied with the 2005 club for the worst 11-game start in franchise history. How LoDo can they go? It was a bad night for the defense. For the first time, Gold Glove shortstop Ezequiel Tovar and Gold Glove center fielder Brenton Doyle made an error in the same…
