Ariande, a freshman at Fairview High School, now has more to worry about than navigating high school, where she’s been focused on making friends and maintaining grades while working for her parents’ small cleaning business. The just-turned 15-year-old, who asked to use only her middle name to protect her parents, is worried she and her 5-year-old sister could end up with estranged family members or split up in foster care if her undocumented parents are detained or deported. Complicating the issue is that both Ariande and her sister are on the autism spectrum. Her sister is more significantly impacted and is…

The Nuggets’ championship hopes seem to hinge on whether they can score 140 every night in the playoffs. No, that is not a healthy lifestyle.Offense is gluttony these days in Denver. It’s easy to take for granted how effortlessly scoring comes to Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray and everyone in their orbit. Even amid some recent floor-spacing turbulence, the Nuggets boast the best offensive rating in the Western Conference (second-best overall). They’re on track to finish this season as the third team in NBA history and the first in 40 years to average 31 assists. But they’re consuming calories without burning them. Forty…

Last year, Jon Rakiecki busted out PowerPoint to show his Wizards where they wanted to go.The Windsor basketball coach put together a presentation on the school’s last boys basketball team to win a state title in 1924. For the entire first year of Tonia Jones’ tenure at Mullen, hired in August of 2022 with championship-winning shoes to fill, her Mustangs didn’t shoot a basket in practice.Seriously, Jones affirmed Saturday night. Not one. They could do that on their own time, she surmised, a former collegiate player at Regis University and Metro State who entered Mullen with a highly intentional vision of the culture she planned to build.“All we were,” Jones smiled Saturday, “was defensively focused. And so this is where I thought we’d be, at some point.”“And I love it,” she added.Where they thought they’d be, and…

Best girls basketball player in Colorado history? Betts your sweet bippy it’s Sienna.“We were having this discussion (Friday) night,” former Niwot coach Terri Ward told me with a chuckle after watching Sienna Betts and Grandview crush Legend, 61-39, in the CHSAA 6A girls championship game. “So, it’s funny that this is coming up right now.”It’s come up because Betts, the Wolves’ 6-foot-4 power forward, put a bow on a stellar prep career Saturday by putting a hurt on the Titans: 21 points, 16 rebounds, three steals. Sienna led Grandview in shots (10), makes (seven), defensive rebounds (13) and blocks (one). But…
