On the dry-erase board behind him, a list of current prayers included calling upon divine guidance for the country’s “immigration situation.”That topic has prompted a lot of reflection lately: “I cannot imagine how people reconcile mass deportation and all of that with Jesus’ teachings,” Kaufman said during an interview last week. “I don’t understand how the mental gymnastics work there, quite frankly.”His church protected a Mexican woman under a removal order during…

By STEPHEN GROVESWASHINGTON — When Donald Trump took office in 2017 with promises to crack down on immigration, he was met by widespread protests that filled churches, airports and union halls as Democratic lawmaker vowed to fight the new Republican president at every turn. The second time around, Democrats helped send an immigration bill to his desk during his first week in office.Stinging from election losses, the Democratic Party has so far been splintered in responding to Trump’s push against illegal immigration. Yet the party’s soul searching comes as the stakes could hardly be higher. The new president is acting to…

Dear Eric: I am really struggling with anger and heartbreak and need a little help. A year ago, my husband took his own life. Four days before he passed, he told me that he had been having an affair with another man.I had suspected there was something going on and I asked my husband. He never gave me a straight answer. The affair had been off and on for years. This affair partner is around all the time and basically accused me of having something to do with him taking his own life, among other things he accused me of.My husband’s…

Colorado’s Jade Masogayo, right, goes up there block the shot of Kansas State’s Serena Glenn in Big-12 basketball in Boulder on Jan. 25, 2025.(Cliff Grassmick/Staff Photographer) Going against a former teammate provided Jade Masogayo with some familiarity on Saturday afternoon. Lately, however, it doesn’t seem to matter who is in the paint on the other side. Masogayo is establishing herself as one of the better post players in the Big 12, and her performance on Saturday was critical to Colorado’s 63-53 upset of No. 10 Kansas State at the CU Events Center. “We all have been telling Jade that since…

The Dodgers are invincible. The Padres are inevitable. The Diamondbacks are indefatigable. And the one word that came to mind about the Rockies during Saturday’s fanfest?Impossible. They make everything difficult. Their plan is not easy to follow because it lacks transparency if not talent. When they talk about their starting rotation it sounds like a warning to a health care provider. And their optimism does not track because it is delusional. So why not just say it? The Rockies have no chance. They are in a division with two contenders and a reigning World Series champion which features the greatest collection of talent…
