By Vaughn Vreeland, The New York TimesIs there anything more joyful to feed people than pie? Custardy, creamy, jammy, nutty, tart — whatever its flavor and texture, pie is celebratory, often nostalgic and deeply delicious. It makes everyone happy. I always liked eating pie, but it didn’t excite me, and I didn’t enjoy baking it. No matter the recipe or approach I used, I was never as confident in…

Jared Polis on Wednesday about what he has described as his “belt-tightening” budget proposal, previewing the difficult months to come as state leaders seek to fill a looming $635 million shortfall.“There are some things in this proposal that won’t be acceptable by our colleagues, and we will have to find another way,” Sen. Jeff Bridges, the Democratic chair of the Joint Budget Committee, told Polis. “There are choices we’re going to have to make.”Members of the committee, which is tasked with crafting the state budget in the coming months, questioned Polis’ recommended cuts to certain Medicaid…

The Denver City Council unanimously — and quietly — approved a $4.4 billion budget for the city next year on Tuesday evening. The finalized 2025 document calls for $1.76 billion in general fund spending, just 0.6% more than the $1.75 billion budgeted to be spent on city services this year. That makes the 2025 budget the city’s most conservative when it comes to spending growth in any year not impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic since 2011, according to Mayor Mike Johnston’s administration. It’s belt-tightening — including limits on hiring across most departments — that is reflective of softening consumer spending in a…
A Greeley police officer fatally shot a mountain lion on Friday, the police said in a news release on Tuesday. Officers tried to contain the mountain lion to keep it away from the school, but when the animal attempted to break out of containment, “it became apparent public safety could no…

It aims to corral governors’ offices, think tanks, legal experts, and democracy and open government advocates…
