SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Bo Nix looked and sounded Saturday night like a guy who was happy to just be back on the football field playing against another team. The film review of his offense’s performance over three drives early in the Broncos’ eventual 30-9 win over San Francisco might not be particularly pretty, but the second-year quarterback brushed off any thought of concern after the game. “I thought it was good and I thought our team competed really well,” Nix said of the overall effort. “It was fun to see guys get out there and fly around. As the…

With the dog days of summer barking, 18 of Major League Baseball’s 30 teams entered Saturday with records of .500 or better. Theoretically, all of those teams have a shot at the postseason. The team with baseball’s best record? That would be the Brewers at 71-44 through Friday’s games. Yes, those Brewers with a $113 million payroll that ranks 23rd in baseball, according to Spotrac. Yes, those Brewers, who are headed toward their seventh postseason in eight years. Their plus-128 run differential is best in the majors, which is impressive considering it was minus-32 after a 0-4 start to this…

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — After a relatively inauspicious first-team start, the Broncos’ reserve brigade cleaned up in a 30-9 win over San Francisco in their first preseason game of 2025. Here’s a look at the Denver stock that rose and fell on Saturday night. Stock up Trent Sherfield, WR: Toss a few stacks into the Sherfield 500 fund, at your earliest convenience. After keying in on the free-agent wideout with a two-year deal this spring, Sherfield’s spent the entirety of training camp showing he shouldn’t be viewed as just a specialist. He’s shown sticky hands. He’s shown some burst. And it…

Dugan Darnell’s major league debut was perfect. The 28-year-old relief pitcher entered a game that appeared hopelessly lost. Yet, when all was said and done, he’d won. It was the story of his baseball career — told in two innings. When the undrafted right-hander strolled to the mound at Coors Field to Eminem’s “Square Dance” in the eighth inning on Aug. 1, few took much notice. The Rockies trailed the Pirates, 16-9. Many in the crowd of 36,030 had drifted off into the sweltering Friday night. But in the Rockies’ family section, a dozen fans lived and died with every…

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Matt Henningsen’s season is over before it ever started. The reserve Broncos defensive lineman tore his Achilles tendon Thursday and will be placed on season-ending injured reserve, head coach Sean Payton confirmed after Denver’s Saturday night preseason win against San Francisco. Henningsen, a 2022 sixth-round pick out of Wisconsin, suffered the injury during a 1-on-1 drill at Thursday’s joint practice with the 49ers. “I hate it for him,” Payton said after the Broncos beat the 49ers, 30-9, in the preseason opener. Henningsen, Payton said, will have surgery to repair the Achilles after the team gets back…

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Nearly three decades later, Mike Shanahan could’ve sat here in the bowels of Levi’s Stadium and still rattled off the names of every single member of his 1997-98 Denver Broncos. He remembers them. All of them. How they moved. How they practiced. A twinkle lights his eyes as he thinks of those years, his legs crossed on a couch along the wall of an atrium in what’s now his son’s kingdom. The 72-year-old Shanahan deflects any talk of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s snubbery with an aw-shucks grin. If such an honor ever happened, he says,…

Pat Bryant wasn’t where he was supposed to be on the biggest play of his life. Only he was exactly where he was supposed to be. Down 31-30 to Rutgers on a fourth-and-13 from the 40-yard-line, Bryant trotted out from Illinois’ sideline with 14 seconds left. He was supposed to line up in the slot. But he looked back at receivers coach Justin Stepp. Stepp looked back at him. “You want me to go outside?” Bryant said, reading Stepp’s thoughts before he even opened his mouth. And so Bryant toed the line at the top of the Fighting Illini’s formation on…
