By Beth Dooley, The Minnesota Star Tribune Corn, sweet and tender, is in joyful high season. There’s lots of it, and it’s easy to find, easy to love! The best way to eat corn is straight off the cob, dripping with butter and showered with coarse salt … or grilled to roasty, caramelized perfection and slathered with spicy lime mayo. But hurry, the season for corn is now. Enjoy it by the bushel before summer and corn fade into a hazy memory. Make sure the corn is local and fresh. Look for plump, dark green husks that are heavy in…
Bo Nix couldn’t sit still after one of the worst games of his NFL career on Sunday. “Literally right after the game, or the day after the game,” Broncos QB3 Sam Ehlinger remembered, “he’s like, ‘Gosh, why do I have to wait six days to play again? Can’t we just play again?’” The man “challenges himself to be perfect,” as receiver Courtland Sutton told reporters this week, and perfectionism can come spilling out of Nix in frazzled bursts of frustration. There was a yell as the quarterback took a seat after one interception against the Titans. There were flung hands…
Sean Payton has told the story many times about the first game at Empower Field in September 2001. He was a young assistant for the New York Giants, and the game was played on Monday Night Football, Sept. 10, the night before the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. The now-Denver head coach had that game on his mind Wednesday, one day after the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group announced Burnham Yard as the preferred site for a stadium they hope to build and be playing in by the 2031 season. “It ages me,” said Payton, 61. He…
Add another key defensive starter to the Broncos’ list of nagging ailments. Defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers didn’t practice Wednesday with a knee injury, according to the team’s injury report. Franklin-Myers wasn’t seen at all Wednesday, a sudden development after he played 36 snaps in Week 1 on Sunday against the Titans. A source told The Denver Post that Franklin-Myers reported the knee injury to staff on Monday. He recorded one tackle with one pressure and one QB hurry against Tennessee, per Pro Football Focus. Even with fellow defensive lineman Malcolm Roach on short-term injured reserve, the Broncos still have plenty…
Today is Thursday, Sept. 11, the 254th day of 2025. There are 111 days left in the year. Today in history: On Sept. 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people were killed as 19 al-Qaida hijackers seized control of four jetliners, sending two of the planes into New York’s World Trade Center, one into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and the fourth into a field in western Pennsylvania. It remains the deadliest terror attack in history. Also on this date: In 1789, Alexander Hamilton was appointed the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. In 1814, an American fleet scored a decisive victory…
The term “debrief” has become a favorite in Sean Payton’s glossary. By simple definition, it’s the act of reviewing individual or team performance on a gameday by digesting tape in the hours and days to come. This week’s “debrief,” after the Broncos’ shaky Week 1 win over the Tennessee Titans, left Payton with one unmistakable conclusion. “I don’t know how many games I’ve called,” Payton told reporters Wednesday. “But that’s one of those where I came away from it like, ‘Man, I’ve gotta be a lot better.’” Indeed, it was not one of the more surgical performances across a 276-game…
Part of my job as a Grand Canyon educator is picking up stuff a hiker drops or leaves behind next to a trail. Some of the things I’ve found this summer lead me to wonder what the John Muir they were thinking. A fast-food burger, in the original wrapper. I suppose they left it for the timid woodland creatures, except if fast food isn’t good for us, why would critters want it? Someone’s last remains. When a hiker pointed out a shiny object off the trail, I clambered over rocks to find a sealed urn of cremains, which is illegal to…
Dear Eric: Twenty years ago, I married a man who took care of me and my kids. He tells me he loves me, brings me flowers and supports me. The problem is, he doesn’t want to be physical with me, and it is tearing me apart. I am not asking to go to the moon; I am simply asking for some physical TLC. I have asked, cried, you name it. I don’t want to twist his arm to show me some love. I tell him I am lonely, can we get a dog for some companionship, and his reply is…
Vail can once again prohibit delivery trucks from its pedestrian malls, a federal appeals court has ruled, overturning a Denver judge’s decision last year that put a stop to that ban. A divided panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decided Aug. 29 that laws regulating the trucking industry do not prevent the resort town from excluding UPS and FedEx. “These statutes ordinarily preempt local trucking regulations, but exceptions exist for motor vehicle safety,” Judge Robert Bacharach wrote. “Do these exceptions allow a town to regulate trucking companies that frequently deliver goods in a pedestrian mall? We answer yes.” Judge Gregory…
A 6,000-square-foot warehouse in Denver’s RiNo that sits next to one of the neighborhood’s new office buildings has sold. The nearly 90-year-old building at 3440 Walnut St. on a 6,250-square-foot lot sold late last month for just under $1.9 million, according to public records. That works out to $311 a square foot based on the building, or $298 based on the land. The buyer, Mountain Peak Holdings LLC, was formed by Richard Anderson. He could not be reached for comment. The property was sold by 3440 Walnut Property LLC, which bought it in 2016 for $885,000. Vincent DiPietro, who signed…
