Denver police are investigating a potential homicide after a man’s body was discovered in a Denver cemetery Saturday. One man was pronounced dead at the scene and the investigation is underway in the 400 block of South Quebec Street, the Denver Police Department stated on social media at 6:16 p.m. Saturday. It’s unclear where the man’s body was found inside the cemetery, but his death is being investigated as a homicide. The victim’s cause of death and identity will be released by the Denver Medical Examiner’s Office. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at…
Diamondbacks 6, Rockies 2Saturday at Salt River Fields On the mound: Right-hander Noah Davis, competing for a spot in the back of the rotation, pitched two scoreless innings, allowing three hits, walking one and striking out three. Davis threw 40 pitches (with 23 strikes) while mixing in all five of his pitches. He said that his game plan going into his first Cactus League start was to work on all of his pitches — sinker, curve, cutter, slider and curveball. Manager Bud Black said he wants to see more pitch efficiency from Davis. … Lefty prospect Joe Rock had a…
Tyler Bertuzzi scored a hat trick, including a power-play goal with 2:51 remaining, to help the Toronto Maple Leafs become only the sixth team to beat the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena this season. Mikko Rantanen, who had tied the score earlier in the third period, was in the penalty box when Bertuzzi scored the winner in a 4-3 victory Saturday for the Maple Leafs. “I think we had it,” Rantanen said after the Avalanche blew a 2-0 lead. “We had it in our hands. A couple mistakes, including the penalty. Just make harder plays. There was no rush on…
PORTLAND, Ore. — Nikola Jokic was in a rush to leave the building last Sunday after his sixth All-Star Game. His abbreviated version of a break was finally about to begin. But he made time for one of his biggest fans. In the hallways beneath Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Jokic stopped to dap up Hall of Famer Bill Walton. The day before, during a public practice, Walton had sought out Jokic on the sideline to chat. Their interactions at All-Star weekend are becoming something of an annual tradition by now. “Big man to big man,” Jokic said. What does the…
SAN FRANCISCO — In April, a New York startup called Runway AI unveiled technology that let people generate videos, like a cow at a birthday party or a dog chatting on a smartphone, simply by typing a sentence into a box on a computer screen. The four-second videos were blurry, choppy, distorted and disturbing. But they were a clear sign that artificial intelligence technologies would generate increasingly convincing videos in the months and years to come. Just 10 months later, the San Francisco startup OpenAI has unveiled a similar system that creates videos that look as if they were lifted…
As a parent navigating Denver’s school choice, I was frequently in circles where parents would ask each other, “Is that school a good school?” But, by deeming a school “good,” what does that actually mean? For one parent, it may mean that the school is a warm and welcoming environment for their child with special needs. For another, it may mean that the school offers robust extracurriculars that motivate their child to get out of bed each morning. For another, it may mean the school has staff members who share the language or culture of their child. But, the public…
Unexpected partisan opposition to a state constitutional amendment that’s aimed at clearing the way for survivors of childhood sexual assault to sue over older claims has clouded the measure’s chances in the Colorado Senate. Backers, who are working to shore up support, see it as a black-and-white proposal that would give survivors of abuse that occurred a decade or more ago a chance to demand justice against the perpetrators — and the institutions that enabled it. After a state court overruled past legislation, lawmakers launched the bid to place an amendment on the ballot as a key step of opening…
PORTLAND, Ore. — Written on the locker room whiteboard Thursday night at Ball Arena was a summons for players to get to the Denver airport by 10:20 p.m. for their team flight to Oregon. It was an unrealistic goal, especially considering Nikola Jokic’s typically methodical postgame process and media obligation. So maybe the Nuggets were a little late to take off. They made it to Portland just fine. And after a slightly slow start at Moda Center the next night, the defending champions took off and earned a 127-112 win over the Blazers, sweeping a back-to-back out of the All-Star…
A new study by the Western Mountain Resort Alliance highlights the positive role of short-term rentals in Colorado’s mountain communities. The study by RRC Associates and Inntopia found that short-term rentals in Summit County generate significant economic and social contributions, support small businesses, offer diverse accommodation options, and are unlikely to cause significantly increased housing prices. “This study confirms that short-term rentals play a valuable role in sustaining our mountain communities,” said Western Mountain Resort Alliance president Scott Blackwood. “We remain committed to working with stakeholders to ensure responsible growth and a vibrant tourism industry that benefits everyone.” The number…
A Commerce City police officer was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault in Fort Lupton on Thursday. Michael Glenn Parker, 30, was booked into the Weld County Detention Center on an arrest warrant for one count of sexual assault, Fort Lupton police said in a news release Friday. Parker is a resident of Fort Lupton. Police began investigating the assault on Oct. 30 after it was reported in the 500 block of South Rollie Avenue in Fort Lupton. The Commerce City Police Department learned of the investigation in November and reassigned Parker to a role with no in-person public interaction…
