The Shohei Ohtani show flopped on Wednesday night at Coors Field. The reborn Rockies hammered the Dodgers’ two-way superstar for five runs on nine hits over four innings en route to an 8-3 victory. Hammered is the operative word. In Colorado’s three-run fourth inning, Orlando Arcia lined a hot shot off Ohtani’s right leg for a base hit. Ohtani limped in pain, but he stayed in the game through the seventh inning as a designated hitter. The Dodgers said after the game that Ohtani was hit in the thigh, the same place a pitch had recently hit him, but he…

By WYATTE GRANTHAM-PHILIPS, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is suing the operators of LA Fitness, over allegations that they make it “exceedingly difficult” for consumers to cancel gym memberships and other related services offered in their clubs nationwide. In a Wednesday complaint, the FTC accused Fitness International and its subsidiary Fitness & Sports Clubs of illegally charging consumers “hundreds of millions of dollars in unwanted recurring fees” as a result of cumbersome cancellation processes. The agency said that tens of thousands of customers have reported difficulties with these policies to date. “The FTC’s complaint describes a scenario that…

A patio on the street in front of Quality Italian? Fuhgeddaboudit! The Cherry Creek restaurant won’t be getting additional outdoor seating after the Denver City Council voted 10-3 Monday afternoon against giving the eatery the necessary permit. Councilwoman Amanda Sawyer, who represents the neighborhood, said her “no” vote represented her constituents, citing hundreds of signatures submitted against the patio. “When I say that the community is angry, they have every right to be angry about this,” Sawyer said at the meeting. The discussion about the hypothetical future patio, which would have replaced parking spaces, was primarily about a previous patio.…

By MIKE STOBBE, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — At least 600 employees of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are receiving permanent termination notices in the wake of a recent court decision that protected some CDC employees from layoffs but not others. Officials with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services did not immediately respond to a request for comment. AFGE officials said they are aware…

One of the many great perks of being a traveling NHL reporter is the food — specifically getting to experience some of the greatest culinary cities in the world. Anyone who follows my social media musings knows that I love food, and finding new, fun places to eat at. Lots of people — some fans, and plenty of fellow writers — have suggested I put together some kind of NHL food guide. I helped out on The Athletic’s guide in 2019, but it’s time for my own. There’s no secret sauce here. It’s just years of asking friends and Twitter…

By Linda Gassenheimer, Tribune News Service For a quick and easy barbecue-style dinner, I prepared these flavorful pork kabobs under the broiler instead of on the grill. They cook in just minutes but still deliver that deliciously charred taste. A simple sauce made from honey, mustard, and soy sauce adds a perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors. It’s used both to glaze the pork and as a dipping sauce on the side. To round out this easy summer meal, I paired the kabobs with corn on the cob, quickly cooked in the microwave for a no-fuss finish. HELPFUL HINTS:…
