Three people were taken to the hospital Saturday morning after a small fire in a housing unit at the state-run Denver Women’s Correctional Facility, according to the Denver Fire Department.
Firefighters responded to the Colorado Department of Corrections facility near 37th Avenue and Havana Street at 10:30 a.m.
The fire was quickly extinguished but ventilating smoke from the area took “some time,” agency officials said.
Two inmates and a staff member were taken to the hospital for smoke exposure, Department of Corrections spokesperson Alondra Gonzalez said in a statement.
The cause of the fire is unknown, according to the Denver Fire Department.
The Office of the Inspector General is investigating the incident, Gonzalez said.
