A plane crashed and caught fire Saturday morning in a field north of Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield, causing at least one death.
North Metro Fire Rescue District spokesperson Sara Farris said firefighters were notified of an aircraft in distress at 10:02 a.m., shortly after the pilot took off from the airport and tried to return. The crash northeast of Midway Boulevard and Brainard Drive was reported one minute later.
The agency wrote in a social media post that its members had extinguished the blaze at the crash site as of 10:24 a.m.
Farris said there were “no survivors” from the plane, which she said was small and not a passenger airliner. She said it was still unclear as of 1:30 p.m. how many people were on board at the time.
She also said the National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration were contacted and will investigate the crash.
Anyone who died will be identified by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office, the agency wrote in a 2:53 p.m. social media post.
The Boulder County Sheriff’s Office asked members of the public to avoid the area in a news release Saturday afternoon and said deputies would remain on-scene overnight.
