GOLDEN — Joseph Capra fielded the snap at his own 10-yard line, took off on a designed draw play and found a hole as wide as the Front Range. A solid block from his tailback and one diving defender’s miss later, Capra was running free at Marv Kay Stadium for Colorado School of Mines. The 85-yard touchdown scamper was the second-longest rush in program history and the highlight of a comfortable but quirky 41-27 win against Washburn on a long, soggy Saturday. This game started at 12:05 p.m. and ended at 7:40 p.m. because of three separate lightning delays. “Probably…
Rafael Santos is already worth the price of admission. Three games into his Colorado Rapids tenure, the club paying $125,000 in General Allocation Money — less than the going price of an international roster slot — is looking like highway robbery. The left back has three assists in that time span, including one on the opening goal in Saturday’s 2-1 win against the Houston Dynamo at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The assist itself wasn’t spectacular, but it was smart and required careful execution. On a free kick from striking distance, Santos lined up and postured to take it, but instead…
The Rockies’ epic drought ended with a cloudburst of terrific pitching by Tanner Gordon and one of the feel-good moments of the season coming from a most unlikely source. First baseman Blaine Crim, called up from Triple-A Albuquerque before the game, hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning. It was the first homer, indeed the first hit, of his major league career, and it carried the Rockies to a 4-2 win over the Padres Friday night at Petco Park. “For me, that three-run homer felt like a bubble burst, ” Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer told reporters in…

Dear Eric: “Bella” and I met more than 35 years ago as volunteers. We maintained a friendship despite totally different life paths: she had a string of relationships that never went very far; I married, became a stepmom, then had a baby. She wasn’t able to maintain a career due to increasing mental health issues that also affected her physical health. She became a recluse for two years. I have deep appreciation for the complexities that mental illness brings. I know that love and compassion are what Bella needs and that they are the basis upon which this friendship has…
GREENWOOD VILLAGE — The Massey Ratings require a recalibration. Utah’s Skyridge entered Friday’s game against Cherry Creek as the No. 20 team in the nation, while the Bruins were ranked No. 93. But the Bruins made those computerized rankings look buggy. They used a fast start and a furious finish to smoke Skyridge 51-28 at the Stutler Bowl, avenging their lone loss last season in the process. It was Cherry Creek’s third victory over an out-of-state team in as many weeks, after hanging on to beat Cardinal Mooney (Florida) on the road two weeks ago and dominating Millard North (Nebraska)…

The six-bedroom, 11-bath home at 5650 E. Stanford Drive was constructed at 5650 E. Stanford Drive in 2012, one year after the property was purchased by the Laura Anne Smallen Joint Living Trust and the Lawrence Henry Smallen Joint Living Trust for $975,000. The home boasts panoramic mountain views and a dramatic two-story great room with a towering stone fireplace. There’s a commercial Brunswick two-lane bowling alley with ball return and scoring, an…

Chase Dollander realized his dream by making his big-league debut this season, but he didn’t have a dream season. A learning experience is more like it. Manager Warren Schaeffer said that Dollander will go on the 15-day injured list on Saturday with a patellar tendon strain in his left knee, ending his season. The Rockies’ rookie right-hander made 21 starts, had a 2-12 record, posted a 6.52 ERA, and a 1.551 WHIP. He overcame a right forearm strain, was demoted to Triple-A Albuquerque, and then returned to the Rockies. Dollander thrived on the road and struggled at Coors Field. He…
