As the Nuggets finished warming up, not all of them knew yet. In their minds, they were minutes away from their rematch with the defending MVP. “I was trying to grab guys individually,” coach Michael Malone said, his goal being to encourage them one at a time: “Hey man, no letdowns.” He was afraid that Joel Embiid’s last-second scratch could soften his team’s mental edge. “And Aaron Gordon was like, ‘What are you talking about?’” Malone recalled after his fears came true but the Nuggets escaped with a 111-105 win anyway. “I said, Embiid’s not playing. So like, our players…

Colorado reversed a decade-long surge in traffic fatalities with 716 deaths recorded in 2023, a decrease of 6% compared with the record-setting 764 fatalities in 2022. But Colorado Department of Transportation data reflects a continued shift toward what authorities describe as high-speed reckless driving and increased roadway fatalities involving pedestrians and bicyclists. Nearly a third of 2023’s traffic fatalities — 31.2% — involved drivers who were impaired due to alcohol or cannabis, CDOT data shows. The latest estimates for “distracted driving” deaths hadn’t been completed but drivers gazing at smartphones and vehicle touchscreen systems have played a role in about…

Two days after Christmas, I received a panicked message from a Venezuelan mother I recently met. She sent a picture of a flyer taped to her tent — the tent where she, her husband, and their two young children had been sleeping for weeks — warning that on Jan. 3, the encampment where they were staying would be dismantled. As warned, city workers arrived at the encampment, broke down tents, piled belongings for trash pickup, and dispersed those sleeping there. Families with income were placed in permanent housing with financial support for the deposit and first month’s rent, but those…

The Denver Zoo’s latest feline resident has been waiting in the wings for more than a year — first smuggled through the Denver International Airport on a commercial flight, then held as evidence in a federal investigation. In April of 2022, a video went viral when a cat escaped its carrier on a United flight to Denver, reportedly scratching and biting other passengers as it attempted to flee the flight. What passengers didn’t know is that this wasn’t a regular, domestic cat — it was a wild Geoffroy’s cat and the person transporting it had no idea what they’d gotten…

The Avs have put together their best extended run of play since. Two nights ago, the Los Angeles Kings lost a game to the lowly Buffalo Sabres and Drew Doughty went on a Toews-esque rant. If there was ever a game where the Avs might get caught peeking ahead to their forthcoming extended break, a contest against an extremely motivated, desperate team was it. The result was further proof of Colorado’s championship…

It includes no performance bonuses, according to Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff. “We are excited to add Zach to our group,” Avalanche general manager Chris MacFarland said in a statement released by the team. “Over his impressive NHL career, Zach has…
