BOULDER — In the moments fans can’t see, Jaylyn Sherrod is pushing Kindyll Wetta to her defensive brink. Case-in-point: Last year, Wetta and Sherrod were fiercely competing against each other in one of the staple practice drills for CU women’s basketball — a game called “50 Passes” where fouls are hardly called and an emphasis is put on being able to dish under pressure. “We almost broke out into a fight,” Wetta recalled with a laugh. “We love each other to death, but we both want to win so badly. We’re both handsy on defense, disruptive, annoying. So I’m getting…
By MATT O’BRIEN (AP Technology Writer) U.S. antitrust enforcers are opening an inquiry into the relationships between leading artificial intelligence startups such as ChatGPT-maker OpenAI and the tech giants that have invested billions of dollars into them. The action targets Amazon, Google and Microsoft and their sway over the generative AI boom that’s fueled demand for chatbots such as ChatGPT, and other AI tools that can produce novel imagery and sound. “We’re scrutinizing whether these ties enable dominant firms to exert undue influence or gain privileged access in ways that could undermine fair competition,” said Lina Khan, chair of the…
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar offers revealing look at Nathan MacKinnon’s dominance: “We get in late”
A few minutes after Colorado Avalanche coach Jared Bednar addressed the media Wednesday night, a couple of Washington Capitals were shuffling toward the team bus. They were unknowingly helping to prove a point Bednar had just made. The Capitals were filing out of Ball Arena not long after Nathan MacKinnon authored a virtuoso performance against them. They were a desperate team, but MacKinnon eviscerated them with his second four-goal, five-point game in 34 days. Washington’s players were getting on a bus, which would take them to Denver International Airport and then onto a plane headed for Dallas. Bednar had just…
The experts tell us an energy gap looms. Fossil fuels are phasing out, and solar and wind power can’t produce enough electricity to meet the demand in coming decades. But that’s not the thinking of Amory Lovins, the 76-year-old co-founder of RMI, formerly the Rocky Mountain Institute in western Colorado. A Harvard and Oxford dropout who’s been called the “Einstein of Energy Efficiency,” Lovins said recently: “If we do the right things, we’ll look back and ask each other, ‘What was all the fuss about?’” Lovins became famous in the 1970s after his research told him that building more polluting…
Overall, the office vacancy rate in downtown Denver, which tumbled during the pandemic, rose above 30% by the end of 2023, its highest point in more than two decades. The total vacancy rate in the fourth quarter of last year was 30.9%, according to a report by the Denver office of the commercial real estate firm JLL. That’s up from 29.9% in the third quarter of 2023. And it’s the highest vacancy rate for downtown Denver office buildings since the 1990s, according to real estate firm CBRE. A new report by CBRE calculated the total office vacancy rate at 31.5%…
Colorado state Rep. Rose Pugliese, a lawmaker from Colorado Springs, was elected to lead the House Republican caucus Thursday morning, a day after the previous minority leader stepped down in the fallout over his past drunken driving arrest. Pugliese, a first-term lawmaker who had served as assistant minority leader, beat out fellow Reps. Matt Soper and Ken DeGraaf in two rounds of voting. She succeeds Mike Lynch as the leader of the House’s super-minority Republican caucus after Lynch resigned from leadership Wednesday in the internal fallout of last week’s reporting by the media on his previously unknown 2022 arrest. In…
“PBS NewsHour,” the nightly newscast seen on hundreds of public television stations across the United States, on Wednesday evening spotlighted The Denver Post’s four-part special report on the surge in alcohol-related deaths in Colorado. The Post’s Meg Wingerter, who authored the series, joined “NewsHour” correspondent William Brangham to discuss what she learned after spending months reporting on why so many Coloradans have been dying from drinking in recent years, and what the state could do in an effort to reduce the number of lives lost. You can watch the full segment in the video player posted above — and…
The Broncos don’t need another first-round edge rusher. They need an exorcist. Because years after John Elway left the building, The Ghost of Josh Allen still haunts the dang place. The specter of big No. 17, dressed in a tattered Orange & Blue jersey that never was, passes through walls at Dove Valley, rattling his first-down chains in the dead of night, wailing like a banshee at the stars shining back from an arid sky. The creaks and howls pick up at this time of year. The real-life Allen just played in his 10th NFL playoff game since January 2020…
By JOE REEDY (AP Sports Writer) COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — Jim Harbaugh was hired as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers on Wednesday, leaving Michigan after capping his ninth season as coach of college football’s winningest program with the school’s first national championship since 1997. Harbaugh signed a five-year deal a person close to the negotiations told The Associated Press. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the Chargers did not announce the terms. Harbaugh made the highly anticipated decision to go back to the NFL after a second interview and resume his chase…
Fast break Why the Buffs won: CU shot .550 from the floor and went 26-for-28 at the free throw line. Three stars: 1. J’Vonne Hadley: Returned from a one game injury absence to score a CU career-high 24 points. 2. KJ Simpson: It wasn’t his best shooting night, finishing 3-for-10, but CU’s point guard still flirted with a triple-double, going 10-for-11 at the free throw line with 16 points, eight rebounds, eight assists and three steals. 3. Cody Williams. CU’s dynamic rookie went 7-for-10 a from the field and 3-for-3 at the free throw line, recording 19 points, three rebounds…
