They came with cameras and they left in handcuffs. On Labor Day weekend two years ago, three self-proclaimed “First Amendment auditors” — people who purposely test their constitutional protections, often by filming police officers and other public officials — arrived in downtown Colorado Springs as bars let out. The trio zeroed in on a handful of officers who were speaking with other people in a parking lot about a fight. The auditors stood a few feet from the officers and filmed them. Colorado Springs police Officer Kristopher Czajkowski told the trio to move back several times. Then the officer started…

The rescue turned into recovery efforts later that evening, after hours of searching with no success, Larimer County sheriff’s officials said. Crews used drones, boats and sonar to search the area where the paddleboarder was last seen, but could not find the paddleboarder, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.…

When an opposition group fell far short of the signatures needed to bring Colorado’s wolf reintroduction to another statewide vote, it was just the latest failed attempt to stop or pause the voter-mandated initiative. Colorado Advocates for Smart Wolf Policy collected just over 25,000 signatures between the end of March and the Aug. 27 deadline to turn in petitions — about a fifth of the 124,238 the minimum required to place a question on the 2026 ballot. More than 400 volunteers gathered signatures, but the group did not raise enough money to hire paid petition circulators and so could not…

By PABLO MONSIVAIS and FARNOUSH AMIRI WASHINGTON (AP) — Law enforcement officials on Sunday removed a peace vigil that had stood outside the White House for more than four decades after President Donald Trump ordered it to be taken down as part of the clearing of homeless encampments in the nation’s capital. Philipos Melaku-Bello, a volunteer who has manned the vigil for years, told The Associated Press that the Park Police removed it early Sunday morning. He said officials justified the removal by mislabeling the memorial as a shelter. “The difference between an encampment and a vigil is that an…

It took all of three quarters for serious injury concerns to surface around two of the Broncos’ most important veteran free-agent additions. After catching a pass for a third-down conversion late in the third quarter of Denver’s 20-12 win over the Titans on Sunday, tight end Evan Engram came up limping back to the sideline. He walked gingerly to a medical tent on the sideline and quickly emerged, seeming to test that lower right leg on the sidelines. Engram was ruled questionable in the fourth quarter with a calf injury, though, and didn’t return. It was a cruel development in…

Come hell or high water, or 103 losses and counting, Warren Schaeffer believes in his process. Before falling 8-1 to the Padres on Sunday afternoon at Coors Field, the Rockies’ interim manager spoke passionately about the team he’s trying to build. The discussion centered around the Rockies’ flirtation with baseball infamy. The White Sox lost a modern-era record 121 games last season, and earlier this season, it looked like the Rockies would eclipse that mark. That’s not going to happen — the Rockies are 40-103 with 19 games left and need just two wins — but Schaeffer doesn’t care about…

Initial thoughts from the Broncos’ 20-12 win over the Tennessee Titans in Week 1 at Empower Field: 1. Did Bo Nix prove Jeffery Simmons right?: We still want to Bo-lieve. We really do. We’re not quite sounding the alarm on a sophomore slump. Although full disclosure, those two words were muttered in the press box Sunday after Nix had thrown two unsightly picks through the first three quarters of the Broncos’ win over Tennessee. Truth be told? Bo almost threw a couple more. Titans defensive end Jeffery Simmons had raised eyebrows when he said last week that Nix was a…
