WASHINGTON — The nation will hear a new president sing a far different tune in his prime-time address before Congress on Tuesday night. Some Americans will lustily sing along. Others will plug their ears. The old tune is out — the one where a president declares “we strongly support NATO,” “I believe strongly in free trade” and Washington must do more to promote clean air, clean water, women’s health and civil rights. That was Donald Trump in 2017.That was back when gestures of bipartisanship and appeals to national unity were still in the mix on the night the president comes before Congress…

When Dan Gibbs put on his firefighting gear and responded to the Cameron Peak Fire as it ripped through more than 326 square miles of northern Colorado in 2020, his 15-member attack crew was not staffed by full-time firefighters. The executive director of Colorado’s Department of Natural Resources instead was joined by a hodgepodge of U.S. Forest Service employees: a forest technician, a campgrounds manager, three seasonal hotshot firefighters. The crew worked its way through neighborhoods surrounded by the blaze and tried to keep homes from burning. Now, after a slew of firings at the Forest Service and an ongoing federal hiring freeze…

The Colorado Rapids’ best attacking night of the season was nearly wasted. While a 3-3 draw to FC Dallas was disappointing from a Rapids standpoint, a quick shift in attacking philosophy following a swift exit from the CONCACAF Champions Cup was effective. In their MLS home opener at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday, the Rapids looked comfortable attacking — and like they were having fun.Scoring three goals, one in lucky and improbable fashion, is enjoyable. Giving up three at home, as Djordje Mihailovic put it, is not. Here are three takeaways from a hard-earned point at home:Attacking vision being realizedEarly this MLS…

David Valadao ’s central California district, 6 out of 10 people use Medicaid to pay for doctor visits and emergency room trips. And one-third of the population is covered by Medicaid in GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski’s Alaska, one of the nation’s costliest corners for health care. Each of these Republicans — and some of their conservative colleagues — lined up last week to defend Medicaid, in…

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Pressure doesn’t make perfect.Rockies outfielder Nolan Jones learned that harsh lesson last season.“That was the ultimate mistake that I made, I wanted to be perfect,” he said. “I set big goals. I wanted to hit 30 homers. I wanted to steal 30 bases. I wanted to win a Gold Glove.“I wanted to be perfect, and when I wasn’t, it was mentally frustrating. I wasn’t having success, and all of those goals seemed farther away. It was a huge learning experience for me. Now, I want to get back to who I was in 2023.”The Rockies would turn…

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — One of the most striking things about Rockies spring training this year is the confidence of the young players. They’re carrying a giant chip on their shoulders.Given the team’s track record, that’s pretty remarkable. And given that the Rockies are coming off back-to-back 100-loss seasons and the worst offensive performance in franchise history, you’ve got to admire their chutzpah.Maybe it’s a good sign for the Rockies’ future. Maybe.Several players — including Colorado’s two stars, center fielder Brenton Doyle and shortstop Ezequiel Tovar — quietly told me the team could surprise people.Outfield prospect Zac Veen said it loudly and…
