FORT COLLINS — Randi Ellis can remember the sounds radiating from the family’s garage early each morning. Music bumping at full blast. Dumbbells clashing. And the thump, thump, thumping of her brother’s hands pounding a heavy bag. “He knew that one way or another, he was going to follow in our father’s footsteps,” Randi said of her younger brother, Jacob. This fall in Fort Collins, Jacob Ellis is playing his final year of college football with boxing in his blood and his late father in his heart. The new CSU linebacker’s grandfather, Jimmy Ellis, was a world heavyweight champion. And…
A Lakewood sports club has a new name and new courts. Denver Racquets Club is in full swing after over 50 years as Meadow Creek Tennis and Fitness Club at 6305 W. 6th Ave. “For many years it was tennis only at the club… but in the fall of 2024 and summer of 2025 we added pickleball and padel,” owner Ian Hintz said. “So now we have four racquet sports and are fairly centrally located in the Denver metro, and we felt that it made sense.” Hintz bought the club a year ago and has since upgraded the inside of the 60,000-square-foot…
BOULDER — Is that Byron Leftwich warming up on the sideline? Ralphie, old girl, you didn’t miss much. Take away Shedeur Sanders from a Pat Shurmur offense, and you’re left with a CU attack that, at times, looked like a pencil with no lead. Friday night’s opener against Georgia Tech had a Baylor 2024 feel. Minus the Baylor ending. After two CU Hail Marys fell incomplete, the Yellow Jackets escaped with a 27-20 win inside a damp, deafening Folsom Field. Deion Sanders’ Buffs, 0-1 for the first time in the Coach Prime Era, were outgained 463-305. They finished with 19…
Denver Public Schools Superintendent Alex Marrero issued a defiant statement Friday in response to what he called the Trump administration’s “anti-trans agenda,” but stopped short of saying whether the district will comply with the federal government’s demand to rid schools of gender-neutral bathrooms. “The Trump administration, through the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, continues to push its anti-trans agenda through the weaponization of Title IX, a federal law that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex,” Marrero said in the statement. “To our LGBTQ+ students, families and supporters, we see you, and we will not stand for these…
It was a perfect Friday night for baseball at Coors Field. The first-pitch temperature was 73 degrees, there were 33,747 fans in the stands, and six home runs. Yep, perfect if you were one of the multitude of Cubs fans who turned the LoDo ballpark into Wrigley Field West, saw shortstop Dansby Swanson smack two homers and a triple, and cheered your team on to an 11-7 victory over the Rockies. It was the Cubs’ fifth straight win over the Rockies, and they are 11-2 against the Rockies since September 22, 2023, resulting in a lot of happy faces on…
By DAVID A. LIEB and ANDREW DeMILLO, Associated Press JEFFERSON CITY, Mo (AP) — Republican Gov. Mike Kehoe said Friday that he is calling Missouri lawmakers into a special session to redraw the state’s U.S. House districts as part of a growing national battle between Republicans and Democrats seeking an edge in next year’s congressional elections. Kehoe made the announcement just hours after Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law a new congressional voting map designed to help Republicans gain five more seats in the 2026 midterm elections. It marked a win for President Donald Trump, who has been urging Republican-led…
By JAMIE STENGLE, Associated Press DALLAS (AP) — From barbecues to getaways to shopping the sales, many people across the U.S. mark Labor Day — the federal holiday celebrating the American worker — by finding ways to relax. The holiday with activist roots is celebrated on the first Monday of September, creating a three-day weekend that marks the unofficial end of summer. Over 17 million passengers and crew were expected to be screened for air travel from Thursday through Wednesday, according to the Transportation Security Administration, with Friday being the day with the most travelers. AAA said that according to…
By KONSTANTIN TOROPIN, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Since sending the National Guard to Los Angeles and Washington, President Donald Trump has openly mused about sending troops to some of the nation’s most Democratic cities — including Chicago and Baltimore — claiming they are needed to crack down on crime. The threats to expand a federal intervention have legal experts and some military officials raising concerns that Trump is considering novel ways to use National Guard troops in American cities that could set up conflicts not seen since the civil rights era. Though most violent crime has fallen in recent…
