By ED WHITE and CHRISTOPHER L. KELLER, Associated Press President Donald Trump has threatened to deploy the National Guard to Chicago, New York, Seattle, Baltimore, San Francisco and Portland, Oregon, to fight what he says is runaway crime. Yet data shows most violent crime in those places and around the country has declined in recent years. Homicides through the first six months of 2025 were down significantly compared to the same period in 2024, continuing a post-pandemic trend across the U.S. Trump, who has already taken federal control of police in Washington, D.C., has maligned the six Democratic-run cities that…
By Celia Frazier | cfrazier@prairiemountainmedia.com, Boulder Daily Camera Boulder County officials rescued a horse that was stuck in the mud at a property southwest of Longmont on Thursday afternoon. The horse is being evaluated by veterinary personnel, according to the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office. Around 1:08 p.m., the sheriff’s office received a report of a horse stuck in the mud in the 6200 block of Plateau Road, about two miles northwest of Niwot. The property owner attempted to free his horse, Sweetie, an adult mare, but got stuck himself and called for help. A neighbor responded and called 911. The…
FORT COLLINS — Rocky Beers isn’t as famous as his younger sister, but he can still school her at her own game. The tight end, who came to CSU after two seasons at Air Force and then two more at FIU, brings a bruiser element and another aerial option to the offense in 2025. Beers is the older brother of Oklahoma basketball star Reagan Beers, one of the top women’s players in the country and a likely high pick in the 2026 WNBA Draft. “I’m her biggest fan,” Rocky said of Reagan. “She’s killing it. I can still beat her,…
The police chief for the Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo used road-rage-like tactics to confront speeding drivers while he was off-duty, outside of his jurisdiction and in an unmarked state vehicle, prompting drivers to call 911 at least three times last year, an internal investigation found. Chief Richard McMorran was reinstated to his position Aug. 15 with a 5% pay cut after a 10-month investigation into his actions. He was on paid administrative leave during that investigation, which included a review by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and a referral to prosecutors for potential criminal charges. In an email…
With more than 20 years of planning, permit applications and courtroom fights behind it, the Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP) is edging closer to construction. The ambitious plan, led by the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, calls for two new reservoirs and a network of pipelines to help supply water from the Poudre River to up to 15 northern Front Range communities. But, with the rising price tag and NISP’s largest participant — the Fort Collins–Loveland Water District — openly weighing whether to walk away, the project’s feasibility is getting renewed scrutiny. For officials at Northern Water, however, the once-in-a-generation investment…
Auto services are returning to a site at the edge of downtown Denver after a deal that illustrates how development has cooled. The 2000 N. Broadway property was home to a Firestone shop for more than a half-century. But the tire company closed the shop in recent years after selling the property in 2021 to Tennessee-based GBT Realty Corp. GBT, a development firm, paid $5.4 million for the property and submitted plans to Denver proposing a 25-story residential building. But the project never broke ground. And last week, GBT sold the property to Greenwood Village-based investment firm Leeds West Group, founded by…
The reason Kevin Delk wants to sell his Cap Hill real estate is simple. “I’m getting older and I would like to see my wife more,” he said, noting she works and spends most of her time in New York City. The man who opened the vegan Caribbean spot Bang Up to the Elephant in 2018 is asking $3 million for the restaurant’s real estate. But Bang Up has no plans to leave 1310 N. Pearl St. In fact, it’s adding to its offerings in the 6,250-square-foot space. This fall, Delk will debut a brunch menu, as well as a…
A Denver sheriff’s deputy is under criminal investigation in connection with an alleged sexual assault of a former jail inmate. Deputy Abdirahman Ahmed, 43, was placed on investigatory leave on July 6, Denver Sheriff Department spokeswoman Daria Serna said. Denver police are investigating an allegation that Ahmed solicited a phone number from an inmate in the jail, met the woman after she was released from jail, sexually assaulted her and then warned her not to report it because she would go back to jail, according to a search warrant affidavit filed in the investigation. Ahmed, who was hired in 2019,…

(Courtesy of University of Colorado Police) A petition seeking to reopen the law enforcement investigation into University of Colorado student Megan Trussell’s February death hit 1,700 signatures less than three days after the University of Colorado Police Department case report for Trussell’s case was released. Her body was found near the 40-mile marker of Boulder Canyon Drive. The Boulder County Coroner determined…
