By MIKE STOBBE NEW YORK (AP) — The director of the nation’s top public health agency is out after less than one month in the job, and several top agency leaders have resigned. “Susan Monarez is no longer director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. We thank her for her dedicated service to the American people,” the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services wrote in a social media post Wednesday. HHS officials did not explain why Monarez was no longer with the agency. Before the department’s late afternoon announcement, she told The Associated Press: “I can’t comment.” On…

Denver Post sports writer Patrick Saunders with the latest installment of his Rockies Mailbag. Pose a Rockies- or MLB-related question for the Rockies Mailbag. This might seem sacrilegious, but it’s pretty obvious that Coors Field is the main roadblock (other than the Monforts) to the Rockies ever winning big. Do you ever see them building a domed stadium with some humidity inside (think of a giant humidor) to reduce the effects of pitching at altitude? The dome in Texas did wonders for the Rangers’ pitching staff and they were almost immediately rewarded with a title. — Mike R., Highlands Ranch…

Wedged between Interstate 25 and the river, Denver’s Platte Street has always stood somewhat alone, anchored by beloved institutions like My Brother’s Bar (Denver’s oldest bar), Proto’s Pizza and the 13-year-old Denver Beer Co. But in recent years, a number of storefronts along Platte have sat vacant where lively watering holes and eateries once stood. However, that lull is coming to an end with a wave of new restaurants and bars bringing fresh energy to the street. Earlier this year, The Denver Post reported on two spots slated to open on the corridor in 2025 — chef Jose Avila’s Malinche…

Walk any mountain trail, city park, or downtown street this Labor Day weekend and you’ll likely spot plastic bottles or aluminum cans left behind. We call it “litter.” But let’s be honest — this isn’t consumer waste. It’s corporate trash. For decades, packaging and beverage companies have pulled off one of the most cunning blame-shifts in modern American life. They convinced us that the garbage problem is about our bad habits, our laziness, or our failure to recycle. Who can remember the famous “Crying Indian” ad from the 1970s? That wasn’t made by environmentalists. It was created and paid for…

The toxic gas eyed as a possible culprit in the deaths of six dairy workers in Weld County last week is an infrequent but potentially dangerous feature of this type of agricultural work, while experts say the number of victims has little precedent in modern American history. First responders reported the fatalities at the Prospect Valley Dairy outside Keenesburg on Aug. 20 were possibly associated with exposure to high levels of hydrogen sulfide, known as H2S, a colorless, flammable and corrosive gas that smells like rotten eggs. Hydrogen sulfide naturally occurs in sewers, manure pits, well water, oil and gas…

Loaded down with $30 billion in debt and struggling to make interest payments as revenues from its pay television business declined and costs to build out its new wireless network accumulated, Englewood-based EchoStar Corp., owner of Dish TV and Boost Mobile, has been in a financial tough spot for months. Compounding matters, the Federal Communications Commission under the Trump administration has pressured the company to deploy its large and valuable stash of wireless spectrum licenses, built carefully over multiple years, in a case of use it or lose it. And it didn’t help when a deal to sell the Dish…

By ANDREW DeMILLO and HEATHER HOLLINGSWORTH, Associated Press A rash of hoax calls about active shooters on college campuses — some featuring gunshots sounding in the background — has sent waves of fear among students around the nation as the school year begins. The calls have prompted universities to issue campuswide texts to “run, hide, fight.” Students and teachers have rushed to find cover, often cowering in classrooms for safety. Officers have swarmed campuses seeking out the threat. Yet in every recent case, the threat didn’t exist. “It’s looking as if this was another swatting or hoax call,” University of…

State and local investigators recovered a total of 24 decomposing bodies and multiple containers of bones and tissue that are likely human from Davis Mortuary, the funeral home owned by embattled Pueblo County Coroner Brian Cotter. It’s been almost a week since state inspectors found a hidden room filled with several bodies “in various stages of decomposition,” and it will likely take months more to identify the remains because of their condition and “unverified record keeping” at the mortuary, Colorado Bureau of Investigation officials said. In addition to the bodies, law enforcement removed “multiple containers of bones and several containers…

A man pleaded guilty Friday to manslaughter in a fatal domestic violence shooting from last year as part of a plea deal, according to court records. The deal — in which 40-year-old Charles Dorsey pleaded guilty to manslaughter and second-degree assault, both felonies — dropped six additional felony charges from his case, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, attempted robbery and kidnapping, court records show. Dorsey was in a relationship with 29-year-old Maria Pangelinan when he shot her in February 2024, police said. Pangelinan was found outside an apartment building in the 1400 block of North Xenia Street and taken to…
