Kahari Oliver, 35, was shot at about 11:15 p.m. on July 13, 2017, in the 4200 block of Milwaukee Street, police said. His body was found in an alley between Milwaukee and St Paul streets, south of Interstate 70. The shooting in the Elyria-Swansea neighborhood is being investigated as a homicide. As of Sunday, no suspects had been publicly identified or arrested. Anyone with information about the cold case is asked to contact Metro Denver Crime…

An injured hiker was rescued Sunday from Daniels Park in Douglas County after falling 20 feet from an overlook rock, South Metro Fire Rescue officials said. The agency responded to reports of an injured hiker in Daniels Park just before 3:45 p.m. Sunday, according to a 4 p.m. statement on social media. South Metro officials said crews had to create a “technical rescue plan” to extract the hiker by rope. The hiker, an unidentified adult, was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. A video posted by South Metro Fire Rescue shows crews hoisting the injured hiker up through a…

Maddy Acorn can squeeze a nickel until Thomas Jefferson taps out. She can juggle 18 flaming swords with one hand and drive a minivan with the other. She can tell you what day of the week Feb. 27, 2026, falls on without looking it up (it’s a Friday). She can find the best group hotel rates in about six seconds flat. In other words, she’s a hockey mom. She’s got superpowers that would put a radioactive spider to shame. On Sunday at Magness Arena, this hockey mom, who routinely leaps tall buildings with a single bound, tipped a grateful helmet…

I’ve hiked hundreds of miles of trails over the years, and taken for granted that those trails existed at all. The fact is, it takes planning and a great deal of manual labor to build a trail, not to mention the maintenance once it’s done, and much of this is done by a network of volunteers. “Volunteers are essential because land management agencies at the federal, state and local levels often lack the time, staffing or budget to complete all the critical stewardship work that needs to be done,” said Kimberly Gagnon, director of marketing and communications for Volunteers for…

Warren Schaeffer’s vision for the Rockies came to life last week in LoDo. In splitting a four-game series against the Dodgers, the Rockies snapped a 10-game losing streak against their Los Angeles bullies. As happy as that made the Rockies’ interim manager, that wasn’t what left Schaeffer positively buoyant. Rather, it was seeing the offense Schaeffer envisioned produce more unselfish at-bats, fewer strikeouts and aggression on the basepaths. Home runs are great, of course, but Schaeffer doesn’t view them as a be-all, end-all. He wants an offense that not only dominates at Coors Field, but also gives the Rockies a…

The next time you go into one of Troy Guard’s restaurants, your server might be a screen. The prominent chef is rolling out a new way to order at the recently opened Big Wave Taco, a Mexican concept that replaced Guard’s Los Chingones outpost in Denver’s Central Park neighborhood a month ago. At 10155 E. 29th Drive, instead of the traditional tableside waiter, customers can now order their tacos and margs from a kiosk, through a QR code or walk up to the bar. “We’re just trying something a little different,” Guard said of the switch. “Everyone’s having challenges with…

Dear Eric: I started a new job a year ago. I took over as a supervisor at a municipal agency and from an individual who was retiring and who is a friend of mine. The position that I took over for had a number of employees who were retired and had part-time jobs. They were very loyal to him, and he let them do what they wanted as long as it got done. There was no structure at the workplace. I tried to implement small things while starting out and, each time, I would get the response that that’s not…

As students return to school, the leaders of Colorado’s K-12 districts are considering how they might limit cellphone use in schools — including whether to ban the devices outright — to meet a 2026 deadline set by a newly enacted state law. Such restrictions have grown in popularity nationwide as more research shows phones and social media negatively affect students’ mental health and academic outcomes. But Denver-area districts have been slow to ban phones from the classroom, with educators saying they can be both a distraction and an educational tool depending on how they’re used. “There are a lot of…

Rain showers will start Sunday across Colorado, including on the drought-stricken Western Slope where multiple wildfires are burning on hundreds of square miles, and continue through at least midweek, according to the National Weather Service. Four wildfires burning in western Colorado, including one that’s the fifth-largest on state record, have scorched nearly 170,000 acres, fueled by hot, dry and windy conditions. Sunday’s storms will bring much-needed rain to the area, but also increase the risk of gusty winds spreading flames and frequent lightning sparking new fires, according to the weather service’s hazardous weather outlook. Monsoonal rain typically hits the Western…

A newly renovated industrial building in Denver’s Central Park neighborhood is now in the hands of a lender. Bridge Investment Group took ownership of the 140,000-square-foot building at 8000 E. 40th Ave. and a parking lot across the street through a foreclosure auction on Thursday. The property had been owned by Oregon-based developer ScanlanKemperBard Cos., which bought the property in March 2022 and took out a loan from Bridge for up to $23.75 million at the same time. As of this spring, when Bridge initiated the foreclosure process, SKB owed $18 million in principal. Speaking to BusinessDen in April, SKB President…
