By Linda Gassenheimer, Tribune News Service For a quick and easy barbecue-style dinner, I prepared these flavorful pork kabobs under the broiler instead of on the grill. They cook in just minutes but still deliver that deliciously charred taste. A simple sauce made from honey, mustard, and soy sauce adds a perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors. It’s used both to glaze the pork and as a dipping sauce on the side. To round out this easy summer meal, I paired the kabobs with corn on the cob, quickly cooked in the microwave for a no-fuss finish. HELPFUL HINTS:…
A wildfire burning in a difficult-to-access area of the White River National Forest in Eagle County more than tripled in size overnight, prompting closures and evacuations, fire officials said Wednesday. The Derby fire is burning on 839 acres in Eagle County, up from 245 acres Tuesday night. The still-growing wildfire is one of several burning on Colorado’s Western Slope. Five wildfires — the Lee, Elk, Derby, Stoner Mesa and Crosho fires — have together consumed more than 163,000 acres, or about 255 square miles, in western Colorado. The Lee fire burning in Rio Blanco County is Colorado’s fifth-largest wildfire on record…
A rabbit shot with multiple blow darts stands in a yard in southeast Aurora. (Photo provided by Aurora Animal Control) At least five wild rabbits have been shot with blow darts in Aurora in the last month, one of them fatally, and city officials are searching for the suspect. Four rabbits were shot between July 15 and Aug. 15, near East Glasgow Place and South White Crow Way, according to an Aurora news release. That’s near Southlands in southeast Aurora. A fifth rabbit was found injured Tuesday afternoon in the same area, Aurora officials said. “Just because an animal isn’t…
A Frederick man and an unidentified woman died in a New Mexico plane crash last week. Doug Hoverter died in a plane crash the night of Wednesday, Aug. 13, in northeast New Mexico, according to Chris Ramirez, the spokesperson for the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator. Hoverter’s place of business, aircraft incident investigation firm Aeroscope Inc., confirmed he died. Online flight trackers and the Federal Aviation Administration show that Hoverter owned the crashed plane, a single-engine Beech M35 registered with tail number N951T. Hoverter and another woman who has not been publicly identified died in the crash, according…
By COREY WILLIAMS and VALERIE GONZALEZ Immigrants seeking a legal pathway to live and work in the United States will now be subject to screening for “anti-Americanism’,” authorities said Tuesday, raising concerns among critics that it gives officers too much leeway in rejecting foreigners based on a subjective judgment. U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services said officers will now consider whether an applicant for benefits, such as a green card, “endorsed, promoted, supported, or otherwise espoused” anti-American, terrorist or antisemitic views. “America’s benefits should not be given to those who despise the country and promote anti-American ideologies,” Matthew Tragesser, USCIS spokesman,…
Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser is urging the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the state’s law banning counselors from practicing “dangerous” conversion therapy on LGBTQ+ kids. Weiser’s office filed an 83-page brief Tuesday that argues conversion therapy — a medically discredited practice in which medical professionals try to change a patient’s sexual orientation or gender identity — is substandard medical care for minors that can be prohibited by states. “No amount of talk, pressure or shaming can make a gay person not gay, or a transgender person not transgender. Licensed therapists shouldn’t be able to abuse their position of trust to…
The Colorado Avalanche has reportedly added another potential depth scorer just a few weeks before the 2025-26 season begins. Victor Olofsson, a three-time 20-goal scorer, is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Avs, PuckPedia first reported Tuesday night. Olofsson, who turned 30 years old in July, had 15 goals and 29 points in 56 games for the Vegas Golden Knights this past season. He joined Vegas after parts of six seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, including a career-best 28 goals in 2022-23. Olofsson’s last season in Buffalo was a dud (seven goals, 15 points in 51 games), and…
As other NFL pass rush stars quarrel with their teams, Nik Bonitto continues to proceed through contract talks with the Broncos without much of a whinny. Does the All-Pro outside linebacker, entering the final year of his rookie deal, want an extension? Yep. Does he want to get it done soon? Sure. But Bonitto himself said last month that the pass-rush market is in his favor after the Steelers’ TJ Watt signed a record-breaking extension in free agency. Cowboys superstar Micah Parsons is set to blow the doors off contract scales when he signs his deal — if he ever…
By Paola Briseño-González, The New York Times When Gabriella Gonzalez Martinez was a teenager, she would grab chamoy-flavored candy from the tiendita, a corner store up the street from her high school in a Los Angeles suburb. She still felt the pull of its sour-spicy-sweet tang as an adult living in Portland, Oregon. Now a pastry chef, she treats the classic Mexican condiment as an invitation to play in the kitchen. The magic of chamoy lies in its simple yet striking combination of jammy fruits and sour citrus, along with the high acid of vinegar and the subtle heat of…
The Dodgers re-asserted the parameters for their relationship with the Rockies on Tuesday. A night after the Rockies walked-off Los Angeles to snap a 10-game losing streak against the NL West juggernauts in a performance in which Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said his team “let our guard down,” Los Angeles crushed Colorado 11-4 at Coors Field. Colorado, ever the little brother to the boys in blue, hasn’t won consecutive games in a single season against the Dodgers since October 2022. And the Rockies haven’t won two in a row against L.A. at Coors Field since about three months before that.…
