The Denver City Council will postpone a mountain retreat planned for next week after drawing scrutiny for its nearly $27,000 cost in the wake of large-scale layoffs of city workers. Council President Amanda Sandoval announced the decision in a statement Wednesday afternoon but didn’t specify whether dollars already spent would be transferred to a future date or if the costs might increase. “Our full attention must now be on supporting one another and helping our city move forward from this challenging period with the best interests of our constituents at heart,” she wrote. The decision came after CBS News Colorado…
Ignore the slant against Trump and have hope Re: “A barrage of bad news followed by some good recipes,” Aug. 14 letter to the editor I have a suggestion for the writer of “A barrage of bad news,” who is seeking solutions for the litany of doom-and-gloom headlines she lists. First, not all of the headlines need to be viewed as negative. One could look at the president’s attempt to reduce the crime rate in D.C. as a positive move. Washington’s crime rate exceeds the crime rate in the capitals of many other countries. Marilyn Bowser, the mayor of D.C.,…
Today is Tuesday, Aug. 19, the 231st day of 2025. There are 134 days left in the year. Today in History: On Aug. 19, 2013, South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius was indicted in Pretoria, South Africa, on charges of murder and illegal possession of ammunition for the shooting death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, at his home on Valentine’s Day 2013; Pistorius maintained he’d mistaken her for an intruder. (Pistorius would be found guilty of murder and sentenced to prison; he was released on parole in January 2024.) Also on this date: In 1692, four men and one woman were…
Dear Eric: We are a group of three female former co-workers who have gathered regularly for 10 years to celebrate birthdays and Christmas. We have taken turns at each other’s homes and always had a nice time eating, laughing and reminiscing together. This year, one member of our group ghosted the other two of us. She will not respond to phone calls or messages. We are totally in the dark and confused by this and don’t know if we should continue to reach out or let it go. She has given us no indication, at any time, of a problem.…
By TY ONEIL and CHRISTOPHER WEBER, Associated Press LAS VEGAS (AP) — Tourism in Las Vegas is slumping this summer, with resorts and convention centers reporting fewer visitors compared to last year, especially from abroad, and some officials are blaming the Trump administration’s tariffs and immigration policies for the decline. The city known for lavish shows, endless buffets and around-the-clock gambling welcomed just under 3.1 million tourists in June, an 11% drop compared to the same time in 2024. There were 13% fewer international travelers, and hotel occupancy fell by about 15%, according to data from the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority. People…
When Rachael Danigelis and her husband, Nathan, found out they were expecting their first child, their cozy rental suddenly felt a bit too small. Both of them had always wanted to be homeowners, as it was a long-term goal they shared. They had even considered buying about two years ago, but financial circumstances at the time made it difficult to move forward. So they waited. Now, with a baby on the way and in a better financial position, they decided to start their home search. To their surprise, they found that owning a home was more achievable than they had…
By ROB GILLIES TORONTO (AP) — The union for 10,000 striking Air Canada flight attendants said Monday they won’t return to work even though the strike, now in its third day, has been declared illegal. The strike is affecting about 130,000 travelers a day at the peak of the summer travel season, and the two sides remain far apart on pay and other issues. Air Canada said rolling cancellations now extend to Tuesday afternoon after the union defied a second return-to-work order. The country’s biggest airline had said earlier that operations would resume on Monday evening but the union president said that won’t…
Federal prosecutors charged 30 people with largely gun and drug-trafficking crimes after a months-long investigation in metro Denver, a mix of federal and local officials announced at a news conference Monday. Those charged include eight people who investigators believe are members of the Venezuelan gang Tren De Aragua, U.S. Attorney Peter McNeilly said. He said he considers three of the eight gang members to be “leaders.” Two of the leaders were arrested July 30 in Colombia, court records show. McNeilly could not say how many Tren de Aragua gang members remain in Colorado, whether the local members were taking direction…
By NICHOLAS RICCARDI and ALI SWENSON President Donald Trump on Monday vowed more changes to the way elections are conducted in the U.S., but based on the Constitution there is little to nothing he can do on his own. Relying on false information and conspiracy theories that he’s regularly used to explain away his 2020 election loss, Trump pledged on his social media site that he would do away with both mail voting — which remains popular and is used by about one-third of all voters — and voting machines — some form of which are used in almost all…
FTC sues ticket reseller, saying it illegally exceeded purchase limits for Taylor Swift, other shows
By DEE-ANN DURBIN The U.S. Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit Monday against a ticket broker, alleging the company used illegal tactics to exceed purchasing limits for popular events and then resold tickets at significantly higher prices. In a lawsuit filed in federal court in Maryland, the FTC said Maryland-based ticket broker Key Investment Group has used thousands of fictitious Ticketmaster accounts and other methods to buy tickets for events, including Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. According to the FTC, Key Investment Group – which does business under brand names like Epic Seats and Totally Tix – purchased at least 379,776…
