MOBILE, Ala. — The NFL calendar rarely actually, fully empties, except for a few weeks in the summer. The season might be over except for the Super Bowl, but if you’re in personnel, this is a busy season. It’s like being an accountant as April or fiscal year-end approaches. The Broncos had a big set of scouts and executives on the ground here, led by assistant general manager Darren Mougey, executive director of football operations and special assistant to the general manager Kelly Kleine Van Calligan and brand new vice president of player personnel Cody Rager. General manager George Paton…
Denver Public Library cardholders just got another freebie. Through March 1, library members can enter to win a free day on the slopes at Arapahoe Basin, including lift tickets, ski rentals, transportation from Denver and lunch for up to four people, according to the library’s website. “The freedom to explore and connect is a huge piece of (our) mission,” Denver Public Library’s Manager of Strategic Partnerships Beth Warren said Thursday afternoon. “One of the things we want to do is provide experiences and services for free, using only your library card.” The partnership began in spring 2023 when the library…
School resource officers ticketed 25 students and arrested five last fall in their first full semester back in Denver Public Schools buildings, according to new data released by Colorado’s largest district. Black students were disciplined disproportionately last semester, making up about one-third of those arrested or ticketed despite being only 13% of the district’s student population, according to the data released to The Denver Post via a public-records request. “We know that our schools must be a place were all students feel safe,” DPS Chief of Safety Greg Cazzell said during a school board meeting Thursday. “There’s still work to…
Rockies fans attending spring training in Arizona this year will have a chance to get a glimpse at the organization’s future via the team’s 26 non-roster invitations — plus some guys who are looking for another chapter in their major-league careers. Eight of Colorado’s former first-round picks (counting competitive balance round and compensation selections) will be in camp in catcher Drew Romo, outfielders Zac Veen, Jordan Beck and Benny Montgomery, first baseman Grant Lavigne, utility Sterlin Thompson, and pitchers Karl Kauffmann and Joe Rock. Romo, Veen and Beck could be part of the Rockies’ lineup in the near future. Romo…
The money train kept rolling for U.S. House hopeful Adam Frisch in the last quarter of 2023. But with erstwhile opponent Lauren Boebert leaving the 3rd Congressional District to run in the 4th, the fundraising dynamics across Colorado’s two largest districts are in for a shakeup. Boebert, the 3rd District’s incumbent, raised $540,000 between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, according to her newly filed campaign finance report, part of her instant money advantage in the 4th District’s crowded Republican field. The new reports show that had Boebert continued to run for reelection to her current seat, she again would’ve been…
Does your pet have a secret talent or crowd-pleasing skill? TBS is looking for animals to feature on a new show with an in-person opportunity to impress coming to Colorado. “Stupid Pet Tricks” is a new concept based on an old segment from “The David Letterman Show.” Hosted by comedian Sarah Silverman, the half-hour variety show promises “all the original charm, silly fun, and appreciation for the bond between humans and their animal friends,” according to an announcement. The show is embarking – emphasis on “bark” – on a nationwide brewery tour in search of talented animals to film and…
The Denver Art Museum this month removed a case of Native American ceramics from public view in response to new federal regulations governing the exhibition of sacred Indigenous objects. The revisions to the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, known as NAGPRA, come as the Biden administration has sought to expedite the repatriation of hundreds of thousands of culturally significant Indigenous items that have remained in the possession of America’s top museums and universities. The new rules, which took effect Jan. 12, give tribes more of a voice in how their materials are displayed. The regulations now require museums to…
Denver’s initial experiment in housing some of the higher-risk population living on the street didn’t reduce deaths, but the groups running the program’s second phase think they can improve health outcomes while saving taxpayers money. In 2016, Denver launched a supportive housing program for people who had been homeless for an extended period and had been arrested at least eight times in the previous three years, but weren’t facing significant prison time. A study that followed 275 participants and a similarly sized group that didn’t receive supportive housing over three years found that the housed group received more outpatient care…
Front Range residents who drive old cars that cannot pass Colorado’s emissions inspections could receive financial help for repairs if a bill before the state legislature is approved. The bill, SB24-095, would provide an $850 voucher that could be redeemed at qualified mechanics if a resident’s car or pickup truck could not pass the emissions inspection and the resident qualified for an economic hardship waiver — based on income and the age of the vehicle — through the Department of Motor Vehicles. The voucher is one provision in a multi-pronged bill, sponsored by Sen. Barb Kirkmeyer, R-Weld County, aimed at…
For the second time in two months, Gov. Jared Polis on Wednesday signed a bill into law that temporarily doubles Colorado’s match of the federal Earned Income Tax Credit, boosting the amount of money that will go to working families this year. The new law — the first legislation signed by Polis during the 2024 legislative session — increases the state’s match of the federal tax credit from 25% to 50% for the 2023 tax year only. The increase was first passed by lawmakers and signed by Polis in November, during the legislature’s property tax-themed special session. But state Rep.…
