Rain turned to snow across the metro area Saturday morning as the winter storm that hit the mountains over the past two days continued to sweep across Colorado. On average, Denver saw between 5 to 6 inches of snow accumulation and some cities further west in the metro area saw up to 10 inches Saturday, according to the National Weather Service. “Over the Denver area the storm has slowed down significantly, but there’s still a band of snow west of the metro area spitting stuff out,” said NWS meteorologist Kenley Bonner at 6 p.m. Saturday. “We expect the rest of…
Aaron Gordon was running a fade route, straight downfield, but the ball wasn’t lofted up for him to chase. It was thrown on a line, about head height. As he turned to make a catch, multiple defenders were converging on the space between him and the trajectory of the ball. “It’s not a great pass,” Gordon’s high school coach, Tim Kennedy, recalled. But Gordon was already mastering a rather niche art: ensnaring the unpredictable and the unwieldy. The Archbishop Mitty sophomore extended his left arm while in stride, trying to get the first touch on the ball before his opponent.…
TORONTO — Nathan MacKinnon collected a pass from childhood hero-turned-pal, split a couple of players masquerading as defenders and pulled off what looked a bit like an homage to the guy who sent him the puck. MacKinnon had a pair of goals at the NHL All-Star Game, but the second one will probably find its way onto some highlight reels. He flipped a backhanded shot from between the hash marks over the left shoulder of Florida goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. Sidney Crosby has been many things during his Hall of Fame career, including a role model and eventual workout partner for…
By KEVIN FREKING (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans will move forward with a $17.6 billion package next week that provides military aid to Israel and replenish U.S. weapons, but leaves out more help for Ukraine, underscoring the challenges facing supporters of a comprehensive national security package that would also include billions of dollars for immigration enforcement. The move gives Speaker Mike Johnson and House Republicans the chance to show support for Israel even though there is little chance the Senate will go along. Meanwhile, text of a broader Senate compromise is expected to be released this weekend and…

Long before MarQuel Mederos earned his shot in the UFC, he was finding his way on the streets. Mederos was homeless for a time in his native Texas, sneaking into movie theaters and apartment complex gyms to sleep. Once he moved to Colorado to reunite with his biological dad, it was a similar theme: He ended up homeless again, and sleeping in his car. Along the way, he sold marijuana to get by, got into heated disagreements with his family, and ran up his street-fight tally to more than 25 brawls. But then he found MMA, and that rough-and-tumble background…

Colorado public health officials are asking for an additional $8 million to fight syphilis, which continues to spread more rapidly in the state even as other sexually transmitted infections have started to slow down after an early-pandemic increase. The rate of syphilis cases caught in the primary and secondary stages in Colorado increased by about 18% from 2021 to 2022, and was roughly triple the 2017 level, according to new data released this week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC didn’t release state-level information about cases of syphilis found in the later stages, but those also…
After years of anticipation, Apple’s first major new product in nearly a decade has arrived. The $3,500 Vision Pro, a face computer that resembles ski goggles, will be released next week. So, what can we expect? The device, which includes high-resolution displays and sensors that track eye movements and hand gestures, is one of Apple’s most ambitious products. It bills the headset as the beginning of an era of “spatial computing,” which blends data with the physical world to make our lives better. Imagine giving a presentation with digital notes shown in the corner of your eye, for example. I…
With all the controversy surrounding the Anderson v. Griswold case, we, as informed citizens, have the right to understand why courts will be deciding whether former President Donald Trump makes the ballot. The reasons are twofold. First, the founders of our country designed the government with three separate co-equal branches: the legislative to make the laws, the executive to carry them out, and the judiciary to resolve cases, including those involving the constitutionality and legality of the actions of other branches. The idea is a system of checks and balances, with no one branch having unlimited power. Our founders deliberately…
