Every January brings a wave of New Year’s resolutions — promises made at the stroke of midnight to do better over the next 12 months. And often, as you clean up confetti in a prosecco-induced haze on Jan. 1, you realize those vows included hitting the gym. It’s 2024. Leave behind the old-fashioned notions of creating a fitness routine aimed at dropping 10 pounds or fitting into that old pair of jeans — in fact, throw that tired denim away entirely. Instead, find a workout regimen that inspires you to get stronger, feel healthier and, most importantly, keep coming back.…
Colorado business leaders aren’t ready to sing Happy Days just yet, but they are in a much better mood heading into this year than they were last, according to the latest Leeds Business Confidence Index from the University of Colorado Boulder. “Entering 2024, business confidence remains suppressed but is on the rise,” according to the report, which is published quarterly. The LCBI looks at six different categories and asks respondents what they expect over the next two quarters. An index score of 50 indicates an expansionary or positive outlook, while one below 50 is negative, indicating expectations for a contraction.…
For nearly two decades, a unique coalition of conservationists, ranchers and recreationists have fought to block oil and gas development on a rugged section of land on the Western Slope. The Thompson Divide is “quintessential, old-school Colorado,” as one advocate put it. It encompasses rugged canyons, dramatic mountains, scraggly foothills and broad valleys. Few roads cut through it, and cell phone service is sparse. Temporary protections for the land are now on the horizon after years of lobbying and organizing. The U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management requested that the U.S. secretary of the interior block future…
A local company has gone from “Shark Tank” to bankruptcy court. Thornton-based M.C. Squares, which makes whiteboard sticky notes, planners and to-do lists, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Dec. 22. The company said in the filing that it owes $3.3 million to 43 creditors and has assets of $900,000. Chapter 11 bankruptcy allows a business to restructure and keep operating while paying creditors over time. Founder and CEO Anthony Franco signed the filings. He declined to comment. Franco founded M.C. Squares nearly 10 years ago to replace disposable office and school supplies such as sticky notes. Its products sell for about $25,…
Pat Surtain II is about as outwardly humble an NFL star as you’ll find. Even he admitted Wednesday, though, that he needs to find a bigger space in his house for his growing hardware collection. “They stashed away in the basement at the crib,” the Broncos cornerback said of the awards he’s collected through his first three seasons as a professional. “I’ve got a little awards section around, but I’m running out of room so I’ve got to come up with a new side of things.” He’s adding fast this week after getting named a Pro Bowl starter on Wednesday…

One of the top contenders for the Hart Trophy this season, Nathan MacKinnon received another honor Thursday night. The Avalanche’s superstar forward was named to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game, marking the seventh time he’s been added to the game, which is Feb. 3 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto. That ties Peter Forsberg for second-most in franchise history. MacKinnon now only trails Joe Sakic, who had 12 appearances and is now the team’s president of hockey operations. MacKinnon began Thursday evening second in the NHL in scoring with 61 points, two behind Tampa Bay’s Nikita Kucherov. He started slow, at…

Guanella Pass Brewing, which has locations in Georgetown and Empire, is bankrupt. The 7-year-old brewery filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Dec. 30. It has $2.3 million in debt, far more than the $860,000 in gross revenue that it earned in 2023. Guanella Pass became Georgetown’s first brewery since Prohibition when it opened in May 2017 at 501 Rose St. in the tiny Clear Creek County town. It has 16 owners, led by Steven and Stacey Skalski of Evergreen, who together are its majority shareholders. Steven Skalski bought 501 Rose St. for $180,000 in 2016, county records show. “We’ve got this building,…
Vance Joseph knows the score in the NFL. It’s a tough business. Early in the season, the Broncos’ defensive business was bad. Since then, though, the Denver defensive coordinator has helped engineer a turnaround in a season he described Thursday as rewarding and also encouraging regarding what the future holds. “It took us a while for us to catch our balance, but I was proud of the guys for allowing us to coach them,” he said in likely his final chat with reporters before the offseason. “In this league, it’s pro football, they can say no to your coaching. They…
