Festivus is back! And with my aluminum pole, with a high strength-to-weight ratio, now pulled out of the crawl space we are ready for a tinsel-free Festivus miracle. Another year has come and gone in the sports world, memories were made, champions were crowned and over the past 12 months, my basket was filled with content for this year’s piece. We will start by paying our respect to the classic TV show Seinfeld with my favorite tradition, the “airing of grievances.” I have a lot of problems with teams, commissioners, fans, owners, players, rules and mascots. And now, you’re gonna…
Around the AFC Playoff picture. There are so many teams bunched up for playoff positioning, from three entering Sunday tied at 8-6 atop the AFC South to the seven teams entering the weekend with either seven or eight wins. At this point, it’s tough to know which way is up. But this will be a big weekend for clarity. Some way or another, at least a team or two rolling with a backup quarterback is going to make it to the postseason. Joe Flacco in Cleveland, Case Keenum in Houston, Jake Browning in Cincinnati, Gardner Minshew in Indianapolis. Then, can any…
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — Much to the rest of the NBA’s chagrin, the Nuggets’ supposedly weak second unit was a leading catalyst for their improved offense in recent road games. Maybe it was only a matter of time before a slip. Sometimes, a defending champion starting five can carry the load. Nikola Jokic registered 31 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists while Jamal Murray erupted in the second half, and the Nuggets edged the Nets 122-117 for their fourth consecutive road win Friday night at Barclays Center. Denver (20-10) trailed 105-101 with under five minutes to go, but Jokic scored the…

QR codes, the square bar codes that can be scanned and read by smartphones, are seemingly used everywhere: to board flights, enter concerts and look at restaurant menus. But scammers trying to steal personal information have also been using QR codes to direct people to harmful websites that can harvest their data, Alvaro Puig, a consumer education specialist at the Federal Trade Commission, wrote in a blog post Wednesday on the agency’s consumer advice page. Would-be scammers hide dangerous links in the black-and-white jumble of some QR codes, the FTC warned. The people behind those schemes direct users to the…
A man sentenced to life in prison for a 30-year-old Pueblo gang killing will be released next month after receiving clemency from Gov. Jared Polis, who on Thursday granted 21 pardons and commuted seven sentences for people in Colorado’s criminal justice system. Polis issued pardons and commutations to people convicted of drug charges, theft, burglary, trespassing, forgery, menacing and robbery, among other criminal charges. One man was pardoned for driving aggressively with a revoked license so that he will be eligible to become an Alamosa County Sheriff’s Office deputy, according to a letter released by the governor’s office. Polis also…
The former leader of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs’ Aurora-based suicide prevention center will not be taking a temporary assignment in the VA’s national office amid an internal investigation into toxic workplace concerns. Less than two weeks after The Denver Post outlined “emotional, mental and psychological abuse” inside the Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research, Education, and Clinical Center, the VA reassigned the director, Dr. Lisa Brenner, to a less prominent position. The department initially had said Brenner would assume the role of deputy director in the VA’s national office for suicide prevention while the investigation played out. Following publication…
The holidays always offer an opportunity for reflection. For the Colorado men’s basketball team, there is plenty to be proud about in the body of work compiled during nonconference play. There also remain more than a few areas of improvement to consider as the Buffaloes take a few days off ahead of the start of the program’s final season in the Pac-12 Conference. CU completed the nonconference schedule with a thorough 98-71 victory on Thursday night against Utah Tech, improving to 9-2 while turning in another eye-popping offensive performance. Yet once the respite is over, and the Buffs regroup ahead…
A 28-year-old Northglenn man was killed while riding a scooter in a fatal hit-and-run crash in southwest Adams County on Thursday, according to the Colorado State Patrol. The man was riding a TIFGALOP standing adult electric scooter and turning left from westbound East 58th Avenue onto Logan Court at approximately 7 p.m. when he was struck by a vehicle heading east on East 58th Avenue. The driver of a white Subaru Legacy Outback hit the scooter in the intersection and fled the scene, according to the state patrol. The scooter driver, who has not been identified, was taken to a…
A slight drop in interest rates didn’t give home buyers enough incentive to overcome the traditional seasonal slowdown in November. November’s sales volume was down 14% from last year in the Denver metro and 19 percent from October, according to the monthly report from the Denver Metro Association of Realtors. The report also showed homes are spending more days on the market, and sellers continue to agree to price concessions as the close-price-to-list-price ratio dropped to 98.6%. At the end of November, the number of active listings hit 6,684, down 11% from October’s 7,482 properties. Average active listings for November…
