Dear Amy: A while ago my wife got a cellphone call from “Martine,” a very high-strung woman whom she regarded as a friend. The reception was so poor that she asked Martine if they could talk when she got home. Instead of agreeing, Martine exploded in hysterical anger, screaming that the 40-year friendship was over. This extreme and illogical overreaction left my wife so depressed that I finally wrote to Martine on my own initiative, asking what kind of person she was who would treat a friend in such a shabby and insulting manner. I added that I was writing…
A man was arrested in Adams County after allegedly attempting to burn his mother alive, dousing her clothes with gasoline and threatening her with a lighter, according to the Commerce City Police Department. Matthew Nicholas, 41, faces felony charges of first-degree assault, second-degree murder, and forceful false imprisonment, according to a probable cause affidavit from the Commerce City Police Department. According to the affidavit, Nicholas and his mother — 62-year-old Julie Hogue — were out running errands on Dec. 12 when Nicholas threw a cup of gasoline onto his mother, soaking her clothes, before pulling out a lighter and sparking…
Nathan MacKinnon wristed home an equalizer goal in the third period, pumped his fist toward the crowd, and scores of hats immediately rained down on the ice. Less than minute of ice time later, MacKinnon assisted Rantanen on a tipped-in power play goal that came as a result of Ottawa’s delay-of-game penalty for losing an offsides challenge on MacKinnon’s hat trick tally. That completed Colorado’s comeback in a thrilling 6-4 win over Ottawa on Thursday at Ball Arena. It came on a night when the Avs netted four power-play goals and MacKinnon scored his 300th lamp-lighter, in addition to extending…
While it certainly hasn’t felt like winter this past week, the Christmas weekend is looking to bring some snow to Colorado after all to boost the holiday cheer. The weather could still change by the time the storm hits, but the Denver metro can expect to see anywhere from 1 to 4 inches to accumulate on Christmas Eve, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Zach Hiris. While that doesn’t sound like much, even 1 inch of snow on the ground Christmas morning is enough for the National Weather Service to classify the holiday a white Christmas. “Even though we’re still…
A 7-Eleven convenience store that has operated for more than a decade near East High School is closing. Merchandise at the 2341 E. Colfax Ave. store is 50% off, with the exception of lottery tickets and tobacco products, according to signs posted outside the store. The store at the corner of Colfax and Josephine opened in 2011. Its building was erected specifically for 7-Eleven. The property is owned by Denver-based Kentro Group. Kentro executive Jimmy Balafas said 7-Eleven corporate, which owns the store, sent him a letter about the closure but didn’t explain the reason for it. Balafas said 7-Eleven’s…
Shortly before close one night in mid-November, Kim Danner, manager of Gerard’s Pool Hall in RiNo, stepped outside the business to make a call. She didn’t see anyone when she looked around. But within a minute, Danner said, a man approached her as she sat on a ledge. “I could tell pretty quickly he was mentally ill, but that’s a super common occurrence, so I didn’t run away,” Danner told BusinessDen. “I just figured I wouldn’t interact with him.” The man, Danner said, crouched down in front of her — “his face was about an inch from mine” — and…
The first of Denver International Airport’s new, upgraded train cars pulled into the station Tuesday afternoon, more than two years behind schedule. Built by international train manufacturer Alstom, this car is one of 26 expected to arrive in Denver throughout next year, both to replace half the airport’s current fleet and to add 10 cars to the roster, according to a Tuesday news release from DIA. “Passenger traffic at DEN is expected to reach more than 78 million by the end of this year alone, and 100 million annual passengers are expected within the next three to five years,” DIA’s…
By JULIA FRANKEL (Associated Press) JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military campaign in Gaza, experts say, now sits among the deadliest and most destructive in history. In just over two months, the offensive has wreaked more destruction than the razing of Syria’s Aleppo between 2012 and 2016, Ukraine’s Mariupol or, proportionally, the Allied bombing of Germany in World War II. It has killed more civilians than the U.S.-led coalition did in its three-year campaign against the Islamic State group. The Israeli military has said little about what kinds of bombs and artillery it is using in Gaza. But from blast…
Wyatts Towing hauled away thousands of vehicles without proper authorization, illegally kept consumer funds and engaged in “deceptive and unfair business practices” to discourage drivers from exercising their rights, the Colorado Attorney General’s Office announced Thursday. Under a settlement agreement with Attorney General Phil Weiser’s office, the towing giant agreed to pay $1 million in restitution and outstanding debt it holds from consumers who used the state’s 2022 Towing Bill of Rights law to retrieve their vehicles. Wyatts also agreed to change numerous business practices to comply with Colorado’s consumer protection laws and recent legislation. “This is a new chapter in…
