By OLGA R. RODRIGUEZ SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — National Guard troops repeatedly rehearsed their role in an operation at a Los Angeles park intended as a show of force against undocumented people and those protesting the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, a deputy commanding general testified Tuesday. Maj. Gen. Scott Sherman, who commanded Guard troops in Los Angeles, was testifying at a trial to determine whether the Trump administration violated the Posse Comitatus Act when it deployed the soldiers and U.S. Marines to Southern California this summer. The 1878 law generally prohibits a president from using the military to police domestic affairs. Sherman said the…

By Jonathan Shorman, Stateline.org Alabama resident Roald Hazelhoff treasures his newly won right to vote. When election officials flagged the naturalized U.S. citizen’s voter registration for possible removal last August, the Dutch native fought back. Hazelhoff, then a 67-year-old college instructor, sued to stop Alabama Secretary of State Wes Allen, a Republican, from seeking to kick him and more than 3,200 other registered voters off the rolls. The lawsuit was part of a multifront legal challenge led by him and three other voters, along with voting rights groups and the Biden-era U.S. Department of Justice. A federal judge halted Alabama’s…

By WYATTE GRANTHAM-PHILIPS, AP Business Writer NEW YORK (AP) — Just five months after emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, Spirit Airlines is warning about its future ability to stay in business. Spirit Aviation Holdings, the budget carrier’s parent company, says it has “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue as a going concern over the next year — which is accounting-speak for running out of money. In a quarterly report issued Monday, Spirit pointed to “adverse market conditions” that it’s continued to face after a recent restructuring and other efforts to revive its business. That includes weak demand for domestic leisure…

This Caprese Grilled Chicken dish pairs boneless, skinless bird with torn wedges of fresh mozzarella cheese and basil oil. It’s a summery concoction that adds a delicious touch of acidity and sweetness by adding a quick pickle topping of cherry tomatoes. The halved tomatoes take about 25 minutes to prepare, most of that time unsupervised with tomato halves resting in a pleasing brine that stars white balsamic vinegar. White balsamic vinegar is made from the same Trebbiano grape as dark balsamic vinegar. The white vinegar has a milder, less sweet taste than its darker counterpart. Grilled Chicken Caprese with Basil…

By CHARLOTTE KRAMON and JEFF MARTIN, Associated Press ATLANTA (AP) — The man who fired more than 180 shots with a long gun at the headquarters of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention broke into a locked safe to get his father’s weapons and wanted to send a message against COVID-19 vaccines, authorities said Tuesday. Documents found in a search of the home where Patrick Joseph White had lived with his parents “expressed the shooter’s discontent with the COVID-19 vaccinations,” Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey said. White, 30, had written about wanting to make “the public aware of…

It’s expected to peak Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. The astronomical show often generates as many as 50 to 75 shooting stars per hour over California and much of the United States. This year, however, the view will be limited by a nearly-full moon on the peak night. “You’ll still be able to see meteors,” said Ben Burress,…
