SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Nearly three decades later, Mike Shanahan could’ve sat here in the bowels of Levi’s Stadium and still rattled off the names of every single member of his 1997-98 Denver Broncos. He remembers them. All of them. How they moved. How they practiced. A twinkle lights his eyes as he thinks of those years, his legs crossed on a couch along the wall of an atrium in what’s now his son’s kingdom. The 72-year-old Shanahan deflects any talk of the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s snubbery with an aw-shucks grin. If such an honor ever happened, he says,…
Pat Bryant wasn’t where he was supposed to be on the biggest play of his life. Only he was exactly where he was supposed to be. Down 31-30 to Rutgers on a fourth-and-13 from the 40-yard-line, Bryant trotted out from Illinois’ sideline with 14 seconds left. He was supposed to line up in the slot. But he looked back at receivers coach Justin Stepp. Stepp looked back at him. “You want me to go outside?” Bryant said, reading Stepp’s thoughts before he even opened his mouth. And so Bryant toed the line at the top of the Fighting Illini’s formation on…
When the Colorado football team takes the field on Aug. 29 for the season opener against Georgia Tech, it will be a much different looking squad. Many of the main attractions from the last two years – most notably quarterback Shedeur Sanders and Heisman Trophy-winning receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter – are now in the NFL, as are some key supporting stars. This is not a rebuilding project for head coach Deion Sanders, though, as he heads into his third season leading the Buffaloes. “The next phase is, I think we’re going to win differently, but we’re going to win,” he said…
MEEKER — When a 60,000-acre wildfire is breathing down the neck of a small northwestern Colorado town, the locals don’t freeze. They follow their first instinct — to jump into action to protect themselves and their neighbors. That’s how brothers David and Brian Smith found themselves standing at a crossroads about three miles west of Meeker just before lunchtime on Friday with two semitrailer-sized cattle haulers, along with a smaller livestock trailer and a couple of farmhands. Hot spots from the Lee fire flare along W. Highway 64 in Rio Blanco County about 10 miles outside of Meeker, Colorado, on…
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Rookie Shedeur Sanders’ NFL preseason debut was so impressive even LeBron James took notice. The former CU Buffs star completed 14 of 23 passes for 138 yards and two touchdown passes in the first half to Kaden Davis on Friday night as the Cleveland Browns defeated the Carolina Panthers 30-10. “That young (man) looking good out there,” James posted on X. “Keep going UP!!! HEAD down on the grind and HEAD high to the most high.” The four-time NBA champion followed up with another post, adding “And I don’t wanna hear that ‘It’s only preseason’ bs. Cause…
Byron Leftwich hasn’t officially been announced as a member of the Colorado football coaching staff, but he’s already making an impact. The former NFL quarterback has been working with the Buffaloes’ quarterbacks this month as they prepare for the upcoming season. “He’s phenomenal,” head coach Deion Sanders said. “I’m not even equipped with words to describe what he’s brought to the table: his experience, his knowledge, his day to day, just communication and on the field, communication with the quarterbacks has been superb. “He’s much more than expected, much greater than we would ever have thought that he was. He’s…
The Colorado Avalanche can’t quit Joel Kiviranta. The team and veteran left wing agreed to a one-year contract for the third consecutive season, the team announced Friday morning. The salary number was not disclosed. Kiviranta is coming off a productive year in Colorado, with the 29-year-old Vantaa, Finland, native accumulating 23 points (16 goals, seven assists) over 79 games during the regular season. His postseason performance, however, was a dud statistically with zero points over seven games against his former team, the Dallas Stars. Still, the Avs couldn’t resist bringing back the depth scorer after he notched three multi-goal performances…
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The Broncos and 49ers came away from their two-plus hours on the practice field Thursday with good vibes and plenty of film to evaluate. As useful as those joint practices are, there’s something about putting on the game uniform, turning on the lights and playing a real game. Of course, real on Saturday night is mostly from an evaluation standpoint as Denver opens its three-game preseason slate. The tape counts. Injuries count. Heck, after preseason games the past two years, head coach Sean Payton contended the scoreboard does, too, despite the final score having zero bearing…
