By Emily Weinstein, The New York Times Company This is my favorite time of year to cook, hands down, which makes it the hardest time of year to pick recipes for this list. Corn, tomatoes, zucchini, peaches, eggplant, watermelon, grillables, beachables, dusky dinners on the deck, in the yard, on the roof — there is too much to consider here. Winter in much of the country is so bleak, culinarily, that you can struggle to think of what to cook besides stew. Summer is the salty-sweet-juicy obverse, sun-stained and almost too good. But I did it. I chose five superb…
A cat in Jefferson County has died of plague, and local health officials urged people to protect themselves and their pets from fleas. Jefferson County Public Health reported the cat lived near Cub Creek Park in Evergreen. It was the first animal with a confirmed plague case in the county since 2023. Plague circulates in rodents in Colorado, and occasionally jumps to pets or humans through flea bites or direct contact with sick or dead animals. Human symptoms include fever, chills, headache, nausea and swollen lymph nodes. Pets also often develop fever and swollen lymph nodes, and may also have…
One person was found dead inside a home destroyed by fire in the Poudre Canyon early Tuesday morning. A fire was reported along Poudre Canyon Road, near the Greyrock trailhead, about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to a release from the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office. Firefighters, law enforcement and emergency medics responded. Just before sunrise, the 1-acre fire was contained, but a wildland fire crew stayed on scene for the rest of the day Tuesday to make sure the fire was fully out and did not reignite, particularly amid the hot, dry weather and red flag fire conditions, the release states.…
By JOSH BOAK and MICHAEL LIEDTKE, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he will impose a 100% tariff on computer chips, raising the specter of higher prices for electronics, autos, household appliances and other essential products dependent on the processors powering the digital age. “We’ll be putting a tariff of approximately 100% on chips and semiconductors,” Trump said in the Oval Office while meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook. “But if you’re building in the United States of America, there’s no charge.” The announcement came more than three months after Trump temporarily exempted most electronics from his administration’s…
A union representing doctors in training at the University of Colorado School of Medicine filed a complaint with the state labor department on Wednesday, alleging that the university retaliated when its members sought to bargain as a group. The Housestaff Association has collected dues through payroll deductions since 1987, said co-president Dr. Simone Raiter, a fourth-year resident in interventional radiology. The university abruptly stopped allowing the organization to do that in July, forcing union officers to track down interns, residents and trainees in fellowships to get their banking information, she said. “This is something that we’ve done for decades. It’s…

United Airlines flights at Denver International Airport and other major American airports were grounded Wednesday night because of a “technology issue,” airlines officials said. Flights departing DIA for Newark International Airport in New Jersey, George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, Chicago O’Hare International Airport and San Francisco International Airport were on a ground stop for several hours, according to the Federal Aviation Administration. As of 8:15 p.m, United flights to Houston and Chicago were still on a ground stop in Denver, the FAA reported. “Due to a technology issue, we are holding United mainline flights at their departure airports,” United…
Walgreens continues its Denver downsizing. The national pharmacy chain is set to close two locations next month, one at 950 S. Quebec St. on Sept. 8 and another at 6200 E. Colfax Ave. on Sept. 10. Spokeswoman Jen Cotto said the moves are part of a nationwide plan to reduce its store count by 1,200 within three years. Walgreens also closed six area stores in February and shut down multiple others in the Denver-metro area late last year. In an SEC filing, the business said it closed 423 stores from October through May as a part of the program. “We will continue to execute our previously…
By RUSS BYNUM and MIKE CATALINI, Associated Press FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) — A sergeant shot five soldiers Wednesday at one the country’s largest Army bases before he was quickly tackled by other Fort Stewart troops, forcing a brief lockdown, officials said. Few details were immediately available about what led to the gunfire, but officials said the shooter was Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, who used a personal handgun, not a military firearm. Radford opened fire where he worked but officials wouldn’t speculate about a motive, authorities said. The injured soldiers are stable and expected to recover, said Brig Gen. John…
In the 1980s, if you wanted to talk openly about psychedelics, there was one primary place Colorado you could do so: Telluride. At the time, drugs like psilocybin and LSD were newly illegal due to the passage of the Controlled Substances Act of 1970. Richard Nixon’s subsequent War on Drugs made psychedelics a taboo topic in the prevailing culture, even if they had piqued the interest of medical professionals for decades prior. One such enthusiast was a respected Denver radiologist named Manny Salzman. Though he was an expert on mushroom poisonings, Salzman was always interested in the psychoactive varieties and…
