The deaths of two reintroduced gray wolves in Colorado this spring were connected to a mountain lion attack and a coyote trap, state wildlife officials said Wednesday. A collared female gray wolf that died in Rocky Mountain National Park in April was killed in a mountain lion attack, according to an investigation led by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. A second collared female gray wolf found dead in northwest Colorado in May died from its injuries after it was caught in a coyote trap, Colorado Parks and Wildlife officials said. While those kinds of traps are usually banned, livestock…
By ALEX VEIGA, Associated Press Business Writer LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sales of previously occupied U.S. homes slid in June to the slowest pace since last September as mortgage rates remained elevated and national median sales prices hit unprecedented levels. Existing home sales fell 2.7% last month from May to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 3.93 million units, the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday. Sales were flat compared with June last year. The latest home sales fell short of the 4.01 million pace economists were expecting, according to FactSet. Home prices increased on an annual basis for the 24th consecutive…
I look forward to the peach season with culinary glee. Their velvety texture and intoxicating fragrance make ripe peaches a treasure. They are delicious drizzled with Amaretto syrup and topped with whipped cream. If I feel ambitious, I pass a basket of warm cookies, preferably ones laced with toasted almonds. Peaches with Amaretto Cream Yield: 6 servings Ingredients 3/4 cup Amaretto (almond flavored liqueur), divided use 6 large ripe fresh peaches 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream Optional: 1 tablespoon powdered sugar Garnish: Sprigs of fresh mint DIRECTIONS 1. Place Amaretto in heavy-bottomed saucepan. On medium-high heat, reduce the mixture by…
Police are searching for a driver who struck a bicyclist early Wednesday morning in Englewood and fled the scene, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. The car, a black 2013 Ford Focus with Colorado license plate 814-ZRF, has front-end damage and was leaking fluids, state investigators said in a Medina Alert. The crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday in the 2700 block of South Santa Fe Drive and seriously injured the bicyclist, state officials said in the alert. That section of road lies between the South Platte River and an RTD light rail maintenance facility. Anyone with information…
ASPEN — Renée Fleming’s “Così fan tutte” was ready to rumble. Long a star soprano, Fleming made her directing debut Monday night at the Aspen Music Festival and School by transporting Mozart’s masterpiece from 18th century Naples, Italy, to a gym in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, amid professional wrestling’s rise in 1980. Posters on stage display Sylvester Stallone as Rocky, wrestler Randy Savage and Jane Fonda hawking her workout video. In Fleming’s concept, Fiordiligi and Dorabella are workout-obsessed high school sisters. “It’s a coming of age for the protagonists and a loss of innocence,” Fleming said. An outstanding student cast ages 25-32…
For the first time in over a decade, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo staff are celebrating a new baby at the zoo’s Primate World habitat – a critically endangered gorilla born to mom Asha early Monday morning. The yet-to-be-named western lowland gorilla baby and Asha seem to be doing well, and the baby is hitting milestones including nursing and clinging to mom, zoo officials said Tuesday. Asha appears to be bonding well with her baby, Primate World animal keeper Ashton Asbury said in a statement. “Asha is sitting and lying down with the baby and gently patting its back, which is really…
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee has effectively barred transgender women from competing in women’s sports, telling the federations overseeing swimming, athletics and other sports it has an “obligation to comply” with an executive order issued by President Donald Trump. The new policy, announced Monday with a quiet change on the USOPC’s website and confirmed in a letter sent to national sport governing bodies, follows a similar step taken by the NCAA earlier this year. The USOPC change is noted obliquely as a detail under “USOPC Athlete Safety Policy” and references Trump’s executive order, “Keeping Men Out of…
The Rockies got their young man, then they paid him. Stillwater High School (Okla.) shortstop Ethan Holliday, the fourth overall pick in this month’s MLB draft, signed with the Rockies for $9 million on Tuesday, according to MLB Pipeline. Holliday’s signing bonus is a record for a high school player, surpassing shortstop Eli Willits, whom the Nationals signed to an $8.2 million bonus after picking him first overall this year. Holliday is scheduled to begin playing soon in the Arizona Complex League. Holliday’s older brother, Jackson, now the starting shortstop for the Orioles, signed with Baltimore for a then-record $8.19…
By David Tanis, The New York Times Here is a menu for high summer, that glorious moment when all the season’s bounty is on display. The idea is to let natural flavor shine, to conjure up the south of France, somewhere along the Italian border, where simplicity reigns at the stove. With all the great fresh produce — tomatoes, peppers, green beans, corn, basil — a menu like this one can come together with very little effort. I made a salad with cherry tomatoes of different colors and strips of roasted peppers, which could be served as a side, snack…
As inflation and the threat of higher tariffs threaten to drive up the cost of outdoors gear, a shop that has been a Boulder institution for more than 50 years is getting into the used gear market In August, Neptune Mountaineering will launch “Second Send,” selling pre-owned mountaineering apparel, footwear, camping and skiing equipment. A gear buy-back program will start in mid-August with sellers paid in cash or store credit. That inventory will go on sale Labor Day weekend. “We’re talking about it as a used gear ecosystem, because there is still so much life left in some of the…
