By SEUNG MIN KIM WASHINGTON (AP) — Barack Obama had the Affordable Care Act. Joe Biden had the Inflation Reduction Act. President Donald Trump will have the tax cuts. All were hailed in the moment and became ripe political targets in campaigns that followed. In Trump’s case, the tax cuts may almost become lost in the debates over other parts of the multitrillion-dollar bill that Democrats say will force poor Americans off their health care and overturn a decade or more of energy policy. Through persuasion and browbeating, Trump forced nearly all congressional Republicans to line up behind his marquee…
One of the Colorado Avalanche’s important coaching vacancies has been filled. The Avs hired Mark Letestu as the head coach of the Colorado Eagles, the club announced Saturday. Letestu has spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Monsters, the AHL affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Letestu played 567 NHL games across 11 seasons with five teams, including two stints with the Blue Jackets. He was an undrafted free agent who spent a year at Western Michigan and then signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins. For the past three seasons, Letestu has been an assistant coach…
The offseason is definitely not the slow season as yet another week delivered news impacting both the Pac-12 legacy schools and other universities across the region. Here are three developments you might have missed. 1. Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti talks future CFP format Nitty gritty: Petitti is the man behind the radical 4-4-2-2-1 playoff model that would grant the Big Ten and SEC four automatic bids, but he had not publicly explained his reasoning until appearing on Fox analyst Joel Klatt’s podcast earlier this week. Why it matters: Petitti doesn’t care for the spotlight and can get away with…

The Associated Press Iran’ s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Saturday made his first public appearance since the 12-day war between Israel and Iran began, attending a mourning ceremony on the eve of Ashoura. Khamenei’s absence during the war suggested heavy security for the Iranian leader, who has final say on all state matters. State TV in Iran showed him waving and nodding to the chanting crowd, which rose to its feet as he entered and sat at a mosque next to his office and residence in the capital, Tehran. There was no immediate report on any public statement…
The Rockies’ Fourth of July was a Yankee Doodle dud. White Sox right-hander Adrian Houser made sure of that, pitching eight strong innings in the Sox’s 3-2 victory Friday night at Coors Field. “We give him lots of credit; he did a great job pounding the strike zone,” said Rockies right-fielder Tyler Freeman, who hit an RBI double in the fifth inning to extend his on-base streak to 19 games. “That’s what he does. He throws that sinker and misses barrels. We couldn’t find a way to get to him.” The White Sox, who lost a modern-era record 121 games…
The Colorado Rapids are stuck in the spin cycle of strutting, then rutting. A Fourth of July misfire worked against the Rapids early in Saturday’s match versus Sporting Kansas City, and cost Colorado a shot at redemption after blowing a 3-0 lead last week on the road to New England. The final deficit was 2-1, but early momentum was thwarted when Rapids keeper Nico Hansen all but passed the ball to Kansas City’s Erik Thommy, who intercepted a short attempt from the back. He squared an easy ball to Dejan Joveljić, who tapped it in just four minutes into the…
