When asked in March about the opportunity to get cornerback Preston Hodge back for the 2025 season, Colorado defensive coordinator Robert Livingston knew exactly who to thank. “Shout out, Diego Pavia,” Livingston said. “I’m forever grateful to you, dude. Never met you, but if I make it to Nashville, first drink is on me.” Pavia is the senior quarterback at Vanderbilt who has nothing to do with CU, but could have a very significant impact on the 2025 Buffaloes. In November, Pavia sued the NCAA, arguing that time spent at non-NCAA institutions (such as junior college or the NAIA) should…
By The Associated Press The Fourth of July is Americana at its core: parades and cookouts and cold beer and, of course, fireworks. Those pyrotechnics also make it an especially dangerous holiday, typically resulting in more than 10,000 trips to the emergency room. Yet fireworks remain at the center of Independence Day, a holiday 247 years in the making. Here are five things to know about July Fourth, including the origin of the holiday and how fireworks became part of the tradition. What’s the origin of Independence Day? The holiday celebrates the Second Continental Congress’ unanimous adoption of the Declaration…
A good day to remember our Declaration of Independence July 4th is much more than BBQs and beer, parades and horns. It celebrates the birth of our nation, as expressed in the Declaration of Independence, a statement of why our first patriots felt compelled to rebel against their king. Every American would do well to read it aloud at home and in their public spaces on this day — and to honor its contents. Some of the complaints sound familiar to our ears: • [the King] “has obstructed the Administration of Justice;” • he has “affected to render the Military…
By DARLENE SUPERVILLE and NICHOLAS RICCARDI WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump signed his package of tax breaks and spending cuts into law Friday in front of Fourth of July picnickers after his cajoling produced almost unanimous Republican support in Congress for the domestic priority that could cement his second-term legacy. Flanked by Republican legislators and members of his Cabinet, Trump signed the multitrillion-dollar legislation at a desk on the White House driveway, then banged down a gavel gifted to him by House Speaker Mike Johnson that was used during the bill’s final passage Thursday. Against odds that at times…

Kirstin Gulling is making good on a dream she had as a law student in the early 1990s: owning a bookstore. The former lawyer will write the next chapter of The Bookies, the Denver bookstore staple that Sue Lubeck opened in 1972. “It’s exciting in all the ways, especially because I have something to build on,” the first-time bookstore operator said. “There’s a talented community of people who already work and visit here.” Gulling bought the retail shop from Nicole Sullivan, who took over ownership in 2021 after Lubeck died. Sullivan moved the store from Glendale to its current 7,000-square-foot…
The Colorado Department of Transportation will start work Monday on a series of aging bridges over railroad tracks. First up is the Buckley Road Bridge over Interstate 76 in Adams County. The bridge will be the first of three areas in metro Denver where crews will make repairs. Other locations are the Interstate 25 exit to Interstate 70; Interstate 225 over Smith Road; and the north abutment under the Buckley Road Bridge. Construction will involve replacing the expansion devices and repairing the joints, deck and drainage. The project is expected to be completed by the end of December. Native Sun is…
Rocky Mountain National Park rangers found the body of a 66-year-old Fort Collins woman who was reported overdue from a hike this week. Rangers were notified Tuesday night that the woman, whose name wasn’t released, had not returned from a day hike as planned. They found her body near Chasm Lake early Wednesday on the south side of the lake in a scree slope. Park officials said she apparently fell in the rocky area. Chasm Lake is not far below Long’s Peak, the park’s highest point. The lake’s altitude is 11,760 feet. Rocky Mountain National Park searchers were aided in…
Colorado weather: Thunderstorms will move in on Fourth of July afternoon, but skies will clear later
The Fourth of July is starting mostly sunny and warm in metro Denver, but a few fireworks in the form of thunderstorms are expected to develop in the afternoon. The temperature is forecast to reach a high of 89 degrees. The National Weather Service in Boulder said scattered showers are expected Friday morning with additional showers and storms moving in by afternoon. There’s a 20% chance for showers and thunderstorms before 8 p.m. The weather service issued a special statement for Castle Pines, Louviers and Sedalia CO until 12:30 pm. that warned of half-inch hail. Picnickers are advised to hold…
The Rockies flipped the script. Thursday afternoon’s game was the kind they have lost so many times this year. And last year. And the year before that. But they got the key hits in the key moments — especially from second baseman Thairo Estrada — and beat Houston, 7-6, at Coors Field. “It’s about stacking these games on top of each other,” manager Warren Schaeffer said after the Rockies avoided a three-game sweep and improved to 20-67. “We always have that fight, but today, they scored, we scored. … And there were some great individual performances. There was a lot…
