A massive 673-foot observation tower has been proposed for a site in Denver’s Central Business District. The concept plan submitted to the city late last month envisions a spiraling, mystical tower topped with a sphere that is unlike anything on Denver’s skyline. It is proposed to be built on an existing surface parking lot bordered by California Street, Welton Street, 15th Street and 16th Street. How realistic the proposal is remains unclear. Using a hotmail account, it was submitted by Barry Gilbert, who appears to be a construction manager at Denver-based commercial real estate company NAI Shames Makovsky. He couldn’t…

Nikola Jokic was blunt and unsparing when he needed to be throughout last season. It was a relatively new development, a seasoned superstar learning to use his voice publicly, learning to feel comfortable with its sway. When the Nuggets lost to the reeling Wizards last December and fell to 11-10, he suggested pay cuts as a method of motivation. It was in jest, but maybe not completely. Jamal Murray was off to a slow start, averaging 17.8 points on 42% shooting. He had signed a max contract extension three months earlier. Later in December, he turned a corner. When the…

By Luke Fortney, The New York Times In 2020, Fernando Strohmeyer was scrolling through Reddit in the back of Aunt Ginny’s, a dive bar in Queens, New York, when a video of someone making a homemade Crunchwrap Supreme caught his eye. It didn’t matter that he had never tasted the Taco Bell original. Recipes for the fast-food staple have spread online like open-source code. Soon, he was making one, too. From his small kitchen at Aunt Ginny’s, Strohmeyer serves six-sided wraps that are browned on both sides and filled with the 14-hour pernil he learned to make from his Puerto…

Managers in Denver city departments will consider some merit-based factors rather than just seniority when deciding who they will lay off to help fill a $200 million budget hole under changes approved Tuesday by the Career Service Board. Four of the board’s five members supported the changes following a four-hour meeting. The decision came just weeks before Mayor Mike Johnston’s administration is expected to begin layoffs of city employees. While details haven’t been announced, the cuts could be substantial for some offices and agencies. “The rule change is an important step toward ensuring our workforce meets the needs of our…

Colorado’s Democratic leaders blasted congressional Republicans’ tax bill as a “complete betrayal” Tuesday after the bill passed the U.S. Senate, a big step closer to fulfilling a major piece of President Donald Trump’s agenda. The legislation is now on the precipice of full passage later this week, though one Colorado Republican congressman has already signaled he may not support it. While the massive bill would cut taxes primarily for the wealthy, state officials have also warned that it will slash Medicaid and food assistance, prompting tens of thousands of Coloradans to lose health insurance while further straining the state’s finances,…

By WILL WEISSERT and MATTHEW LEE WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. is halting some shipments of weapons to Ukraine amid concerns that its own stockpiles have declined too much, officials said Tuesday. The munitions were previously promised to Ukraine for use during its ongoing war with Russia under the Biden administration. But the pause reflects a new set of priorities under President Donald Trump. “This decision was made to put America’s interests first following a (Defense Department) review of our nation’s military support and assistance to other countries across the globe,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said in a statement. “The…

The Nuggets made a huge splash at the start of free agency on Monday night, trading away starting forward Michael Porter Jr. and an unprotected first-round pick to the Nets for forward Cam Johnson, according to a league source. Denver also reached an agreement to sign free agent Bruce Brown, a key member of its 2023 championship squad. The moves radically change the team’s core and opens the Ben Tenzer-Jon Wallace era in the Mile High City with a bang. Here’s a look at how members of the national media are grading the trade: ESPN’s Kevin Pelton (Nuggets: C, Nets:…

The Nuggets refused to accept the status woe. With the Western Conference looking like an arms race and the Eastern Conference a pillow fight, Denver did not act scared, bored or play the victim. In their first move as a two-headed monster, Nuggets executives Jon Wallace and Ben Tenzer shipped Michael Porter Jr. and a future first-round pick to the Brooklyn Nets for Cam Johnson. Wait. What? Forget Frank Azar, Wallace and Tenzer are the new strong arms in town. Title hopes, like Bruce Brown, have returned. From the moment Porter signed a max contract in 2021, we’ve debated and…
