Fifty years after she was found fatally shot on a gravel road with her 18-month-old son clutching her hand, the death of a Greeley woman remains a mystery. Marjorie Sue Fithian and her 18-month-old son, Dylan, who were set to return to Greeley from a family visit in Denver on June 24, 1975, never boarded their bus, according to a Weld County Sheriff’s Office post on X. Later that morning, Fithian was found dead with a gunshot wound to her head on a gravel road about 50 miles from Denver. Dylan was clutching her hand, surrounded by broken glass but…
The Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after an inmate died Tuesday afternoon from unknown causes, according to the agency. The inmate, an unidentified 32-year-old woman who had been in jail for just over a day, was found unresponsive in her cell Tuesday afternoon, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office. Deputies and medical staff at the jail started life-saving measures that were continued by paramedics with the Pueblo Fire Department and American Medical Response, sheriff’s officials said. The woman had a weak heartbeat when she left the jail but died at the hospital from unknown causes, according…
Independence Day is almost here, and as usual, there will be displays all across metro Denver and beyond. Here’s a handy guide to both the fireworks and drone displays before and during the holiday weekend. Note: Colorado laws prohibit all personal fireworks that explode or leave the ground. Some examples, according to the North Metro Fire District, include bottle rockets, firecrackers, Roman candles, cherry bombs and M-80s. Those who use illegal fireworks are subject to fines of more than $1,000 and possible jail time. Typically, if fire restrictions are in place or a Red Flag Day is in effect, no…
The Nuggets are counting on the old adage about quarterbacks not applying to general managers. That if you have two of them, you really have none. Ben Tenzer and Jon Wallace were introduced Tuesday as Denver’s new leadership tandem in the front office, with both operating under “executive vice president” titles rather than either of them assuming the typical GM position. The new structure raised as many questions as it answered at first. Chief among them is the delegation of a general manager’s responsibilities. Building and maintaining an NBA roster is a job predicated on the art of communication—making phone…
By LISA MASCARO and KEVIN FREKING WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says “NO ONE GOES ON VACATION” until the big, beautiful bill is on his desk by the Fourth of July deadline. And Republicans in Congress are staying put to get it done. The Senate is gearing up for weekend work, while House Speaker Mike Johnson told lawmakers Tuesday to keep their schedules “flexible” as they prepare for more votes. “We are making good headway,” said Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. He expects the Senate will get this “past the finish line” by the end of the week,…
As a film nerd with a 37-inch vertical, Nique Clifford only borrows from the best. Kobe Bryant. SGA. Josh Hart. Jalen Williams. Derrick White. So, so, so, sooooo much Derrick White. “I’ve watched highlights on him and just tried to study it a little bit, of just how solid he is defensively,” Clifford, the gifted and genial former CSU Rams wing, told me by phone earlier this week. “He’s not somebody that’s gambling. He just guards really well and is super disciplined. So that’s something I’ve tried to watch and pick up from his game. And then getting to go…
In search of higher ground, a black bear climbed an electrical pole off U.S. 36 near Lyons on Monday, prompting Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers to respond to the area. (Courtesy of Reddit User dark_paradise) CPW spokeswoman Kara Van Hoose said while officers watched, the bear came down on its own and climbed a nearby tree. Van Hoose said no other reports have been made, which is a good sign as it means the bear likely moved on during the night. Originally Published: June 24, 2025 at 4:33…
The snippet of Josh Kroenke’s news conference that received the most online attention Tuesday was probably one of the most trivial. Still, it was predictable enough that an unprompted comment invoking the possibility of a Nikola Jokic trade would go viral. The context: Kroenke was answering a question about the NBA’s second tax apron during an introductory presser for the Nuggets’ new leadership duo in the front office, Ben Tenzer and Jon Wallace. The second apron is a child of the league’s 2-year-old collective bargaining agreement, imposing competitive and financial penalties on teams that pay their rosters more than a…
Denver officers fatally shot a man fleeing police Monday night outside of a middle school in the city’s Westwood neighborhood, according to the police department. Officers responded to the 900 block of South Hazel Court at about 10:30 p.m. Monday, after someone called 911 to report two people out front of a nearby school, Denver police Chief Ron Thomas said in a news briefing. The shooting happened outside of Kepner Beacon Middle School, Denver Public Schools spokesperson Scott Pribble said. “Three DPS patrol officers were on scene and have been placed on paid administrative leave by Denver Public Schools while…
Dear Eric: The president of my religious institution is, in my view, a fine leader and a rotten speaker. I have participated in a number of meetings he has led and am driven crazy by the number of instances of “you know,” “kind of” and asking “right?” in the middle of a statement. His speech is riddled with these. In the most recent gathering, for example, he said that he will “kind of” pass the microphone to those who wish to speak. The declarative statement is being phased out. Ironically, the gentleman is an elementary school principal. I think he…
