State forecasters expect Colorado’s budget crunch to continue for the foreseeable future in the face of ongoing economic uncertainty. Consumer sentiment remains near its 20-year low, reflecting less discretionary spending locally and from tourism. Economists under the governor’s office expect economic growth, as measured by gross domestic product, to dip into the negative next quarter as consumers and companies feel the brunt of President Donald Trump’s tariffs before flattening out for the rest of the year. And when it comes to state spending, Colorado’s unique cap on budget growth and expected costs for Medicaid, maintenance and more leaves budget-writing lawmakers…
By RUSS BYNUM U.S. immigration authorities said Wednesday they have detained a Spanish-language journalist, who will face deportation proceedings following his arrest on charges of obstructing police and unlawful assembly while covering a weekend protest outside Atlanta. Mario Guevara was turned over by police to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody three days after he was jailed in DeKalb County, agency spokesman Lindsay Williams said in an emailed statement. His case now goes to immigration court to determine whether Guevara, a native of El Salvador, can remain in the U.S. His attorney, Giovanni Diaz, has said that Guevara was doing…
The Buss family has agreed to sell the controlling stake of the Los Angeles Lakers to TWG Global CEO Mark Walter, doing so with a franchise valuation of $10 billion — the most ever for a professional sports franchise, a person with knowledge of the agreement said Wednesday. As part of the deal, Jeanie Buss — whose family has had control of the Lakers since her father bought the team in 1979 — intends to remain as team governor, said the person, who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither side immediately announced details. It is…
A 19-year-old Utah college student arrested by federal immigration agents after a Mesa County sheriff’s deputy shared information about her in a law enforcement group chat has been granted bail, her attorney said Wednesday. Caroline Dias Goncalves was pulled over for a traffic stop on Interstate 70 near Fruita on June 5 because she was following a tractor-trailer too closely, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office said. The deputy let her go with a warning but shared information about the encounter in an encrypted Signal group chat between local and federal law enforcement that was used for drug enforcement. Federal agents…
Although car theft continues to decline in Denver and across Colorado, thousands of vehicles are still stolen annually, according to the Colorado State Patrol. So far this year, nearly one in every five stolen cars has been a Hyundai or a Kia, according to a news release from the agency. Cars from those two manufacturers made up five of Colorado’s 10 most stolen vehicles in 2024, state patrol officials said. That list included the Hyundai Elantra, Hyundai Sonata, Kia Optima, Kia Soul and Kia Sportage. Hyundai and Kia-manufactured vehicles also accounted for 23% of all Colorado car thefts in 2023. “If…
One can never get complacent in a general manager’s chair, as the Broncos’ George Paton said at the owners’ meetings in Florida in March. Build every day. Or you’ll be passed up. “Even when the draft’s over,” Paton said in March, “it’s like — ‘UFL, what’s going on there?’” That, evidently, was no throwaway example. Two months after the NFL draft, the Broncos are expected to sign cornerback Mario Goodrich III from the United Football League, a source confirmed to The Denver Post on Tuesday night. A Clemson alumnus, the 6-foot Goodrich went undrafted in 2022 and bounced around the…
By MICHAEL CASEY BOSTON (AP) — A federal judge has blocked the Trump administration from limiting passport sex markers for many transgender and nonbinary Americans. Tuesday’s ruling from U.S. District Judge Julia Kobick means that transgender or nonbinary people who are without a passport or need to apply for a new one can request a male, female or “X” identification marker rather than being limited to the marker that matches the gender assigned at birth. In an executive order signed in January, the president used a narrow definition of the sexes instead of a broader conception of gender. The order…
Don’t overlook the nuclear option Re: “New laws on turf, wild horses, clean energy,” June 11 news story Among many issues in this article, of note is House Bill 1040, which adds nuclear energy to be counted toward utilities’ clean-energy goals and eligible for financing set aside for clean energy. Although most environmentalists are opposed to nuclear energy, it is capable of providing large quantities of reliable electrical energy while generating little greenhouse gas emissions. Wind and solar energy are great, but are subject to variations throughout the day and year. How will solar and wind generate enough electricity to get…

Keeler: Nuggets don’t have GM 8 days before NBA draft? Josh Kroenke better have cleanser, not Tenzer
It better be a cleanser, not a Tenzer. A franchise with peak Nikola Jokic deserves a Jokic-level general manager. ESPN analyst Bob Myers, who built a dynasty at Golden State. Miami’s Andy Elisburg. Monte McNair. David Griffin. Heck, even a Tim Connelly reunion would feel like a shot in the arm right about now. Lord help Josh Kroenke if he’s kept Nuggets Nation waiting on the front porch for two straight months only to keep the GM job in-house. No offense to interim GM Ben Tenzer, but this is getting a little ridiculous. The NBA draft is next Wednesday. Free…
