An activist and frequent protester at Aurora City Council meetings has filed a federal lawsuit against the city, claiming her First Amendment rights are being violated by a recent decision to end public comment at its twice-monthly business meetings. MiDian Shofner, who uses the last name Holmes in her suit, filed the complaint this week in U.S. District Court in Denver. It says the council ended public comment in a June 9 vote “to restrict one viewpoint: the viewpoint criticizing the (Aurora Police Department’s) killing of (Kilyn) Lewis and Aurora’s inadequate response to it.” “Such actions sought to keep those…

The first weekend of summer has been a scorcher, with temperatures flirting with triple digits in metro Denver for the first time this year. With the heat comes a burst of desire to head to a river, creek or lake to seek relief. But waterways across the state — flush with recently melted snowpack — are often still a bone-chilling 45 degrees or so. Fall in, jump in or get tossed in, and things can turn deadly serious in a flash, said Todd Miner, a retired senior instructor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Colorado School…

Dear Eric: My coworker has been wearing sleeveless summer tops and dresses recently. She looks so cute in all of her outfits. Although her daily wear slams, it is her hairy armpits that causes everyone in the workplace to cringe. The armpit hair is not straight. It is short and kinky which is a turn off to me. Her job description calls for her to assist clients on the computer. It is so apparent that many of them talk behind her back (as well as fellow coworkers). I am not close to her. So, bringing up the subject to her…
The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 7 announced Thursday night that it has rejected another offer from the parent company of Safeway and Albertsons, and plans to expand its now six-day strike to additional Colorado cities. Negotiations resumed this week from Tuesday to Thursday, but after exchanging numerous proposals, the union said the company remained unwilling to offer an agreement that meets the needs of workers. As a result, negotiations have ended for the week, and additional stores will go on strike in the coming days. The union did not specify where the additional walkouts will take place. The…
