The Nuggets are not renewing the contract of assistant general manager Tommy Balcetis, multiple sources familiar with the situation told The Denver Post on Monday. Balcetis joined the organization in 2013 under then-general manager Tim Connelly, running the team’s analytics department and eventually rising to the assistant GM role. Born in Lithuania, he’s been highly regarded as an up-and-coming front office mind for years, having been selected for The Athletic’s 40 under 40 list of bright young executives, coaches and agents in 2022. But when the Nuggets fired Calvin Booth in April, their G League affiliate general manager, Ben Tenzer,…
By JILL LAWLESS, Associated Press KANANASKIS, Alberta (AP) — U.S. President Donald Trump and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Monday that they had signed a trade deal that will slash tariffs on U.K. auto and aerospace industry imports — but they are still discussing how to handle steel production. The pair spoke to reporters at the Group of Seven summit in the Canadian Rockies, with Trump brandishing the pages of what he said was a long-awaited agreement. The rollout was anything but smooth, however, as Trump dropped the papers and at first said his administration had reached an agreement with the European Union when he…
In late February, city officials in Montrose and representatives from the community’s oldest church met before a municipal judge, seeking to settle a simmering dispute. Since December, the First United Methodist Church had been allowing some 50 unhoused individuals to set up camp on its grounds. Church leaders said they opened their doors because a recent city ordinance made it illegal to camp anywhere in Montrose. With temperatures plummeting, they worried about people freezing to death. The city of 20,000, located 60 miles southeast of Grand Junction, began issuing citations to the church, arguing the encampment was disorderly and dangerous. The…
The Republican tax bill could push food assistance in Colorado into a vicious cycle of funding cuts, increasing mistakes in determining eligibility and further funding cuts to punish those mistakes, Gov. Jared Polis warned in a letter to congressional leaders Friday. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which passed the House and is currently in the Senate, would require states to pay 75% of the cost to administer the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, which offers low-income people a monthly allowance to purchase food. Currently, the federal government splits the cost evenly with states. If the ratio shifted, Colorado…
A 32-year-old man took a deal and pleaded guilty Tuesday to three felonies in an attempted kidnapping near Mountain Range High School last year, according to court records. Jeremiah Mullins pleaded guilty to second-degree motor vehicle theft, aggravated robbery and attempted second-degree kidnapping, court records show. The deal dropped nine other felony charges from his case, including three counts of aggravated robbery, two counts of attempted second-degree kidnapping and one count each of second-degree kidnapping, attempted aggravated robbery, vehicular eluding and possession of a weapon by a previous offender. It also dismissed two violent crime sentence enhancers, according to the…
A giant dinosaur skeleton in the atrium of the city’s main public library. An environmental sculpture that doubles as a working skate park. A massive earthwork covering 160 acres in the San Luis Valley. It’s been a long, strange decade for Black Cube Nomadic Museum, the unpredictable producer of public art that has rewritten the rules of the exhibition business and served up one surprising show after the next. Black Cube prides itself on being homeless, taking art to the people rather than setting up shop in the pristine white cubes that usually host contemporary work. Mexican artist Gabriel Rico…
It’s heating up in Colorado. Parts of the state could see three days of 100-degree weather this week, according to the National Weather Service. Extreme heat is forecast to hit southeastern Colorado on Thursday, with temperatures climbing to 100 degrees in and around La Junta, according to the weather service’s Pueblo office. The 100-degree heat will expand to other areas — including Lamar, Eads and Pueblo in southern Colorado and Sterling, Greeley and Fort Morgan in the north — on Friday and again on Saturday, according to the weather service. As of Monday morning, Denver temperatures were expected to hit…
Douglas County deputies are investigating after a body was found along Interstate 25 near Larkspur, according to the sheriff’s office. The unidentified victim was found on the side of southbound I-25, about half a mile north of the Larkspur exit, according to a statement from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies responded to reports of a body and started the death investigation just before 8 a.m. Sunday, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Deborah Takahara said. There was no evidence of a crash, and no car was found in the area, she said. No additional information about the death investigation was…
For one inning, the Rockies looked unstoppable. A six-run seventh inning propelled Colorado to a 10-1 victory on Sunday to avoid a sweep at Truist Park in Atlanta. The largest margin of victory this season improved Colorado to 14-57 — still on pace to be the worst team in the modern era — and made another dubious distinction for the Rockies offense a moot point. After striking out 19 times on Saturday, the Rockies K’d 16 times Sunday, setting a new National League record for the most combined strikeouts in consecutive nine-inning games at 35. “You’re talking about all these…
