By ILLIA NOVIKOV, Associated Press KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday declared a unilateral 72-hour ceasefire next week in Ukraine to mark Victory Day in World War II as the U.S. presses for a deal to end the 3-year-old war. Kyiv insisted on a longer and immediate truce. The Kremlin said the truce, ordered on “humanitarian grounds,” will run from the start of May 8 and last through the end of May 10 to mark Moscow’s defeat of Nazi Germany in 1945 — Russia’s biggest secular holiday. That timing translates to start at 2100 GMT, or 5 p.m.…
By STAN CHOE, Associated Press Business Writer NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. stocks are drifting Monday ahead of potential flashpoints looming later in the week that could bring more sharp swings for financial markets. The S&P 500 was virtually unchanged in morning trading, coming off a winning week in its whipsaw ride that’s been rattling investors for weeks. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 145 points, or 0.4%, as of 10:15 a.m. Eastern time, and the Nasdaq composite was 0.1% lower. The relatively calm trading offers a respite following historic swings that have come as hopes rise and fall that President Donald Trump…
Water gurgled softly through a beaver dam on Bear Creek near Morrison as Katie Gill reflected on a six-year campaign to save her happy place in Bear Creek Lake Park from destruction. Cottonwoods towered over the intricately constructed four-foot-high dam. Mallard ducks paddled in formation on the pond it created upstream. Every time she visits, she wonders if the creek she calls “the heart and lungs” of the park is doomed because of a proposed water storage project that has been under study for years. “People have used words like refuge and sanctuary to describe this,” Gill said this week,…
ATLANTA — The Atlanta Falcons said Sunday that defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s son was responsible for a prank call made to Cleveland Browns draft pick Shedeur Sanders. The Falcons released a statement saying 21-year-old Jax Ulbrich “unintentionally came across the draft contact phone number for Shedeur Sanders off an open iPad while visiting his parent’s home and wrote the number down to later conduct a prank call.” The Falcons said Jeff Ulbrich was unaware of the data exposure or the prank until after the fact. Sanders, a standout quarterback from Colorado, is the son of Buffaloes coach and Pro Football…
Baseball can be a cruel game. Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon is living that reality right now. A year ago, he was on a path that would lead him to his first All-Star Game. Sunday, in the Rockies’ 8-1 loss to Cincinnati, he didn’t start and didn’t play. Manager Bud Black hopes a short respite will lift McMahon out of his funk. McMahon had started all of the Rockies’ first 26 games. The third baseman understands that he has been a big part of the problem in Colorado’s historically poor 4-23 start. “I’ve got to start producing, got to start…
More than 100 undocumented immigrants were detained by federal agents in Colorado Springs early Sunday morning during a raid of an illegal, underground nightclub, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. Between 200 and 300 people were inside the club, and 114 of them were living in Colorado illegally, said Steffan Tubbs, a spokesman for the DEA’s Rocky Mountain Division. More than a dozen active duty military members were also inside the club as patrons or security guards, he said. The raid, which had reportedly been in development for months, started at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday at 296 South Academy Blvd.…
One of the Broncos’ prized free agent additions is set to miss time during the club’s offseason program but avoided a potentially more serious injury. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw, signed to a three-year deal in March, injured his quadriceps working out recently and is expected to miss a matter of weeks, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told The Denver Post on Sunday afternoon. Greenlaw’s injury is considered a strain, the sources said, and while he will spend a chunk of the offseason rehabilitating he is not expected to need surgery. He is expected to be ready to participate when…
The play was so ruthless in execution, so devastatingly simple in process, that Colorado defensive back DJ McKinney hit the turf and slammed his fist in frustration. In the fourth quarter of a November CU blowout win over Utah, Utes tight end Caleb Lohner isolated on the left side of the formation from the 3-yard line. He made a move, cut slightly to the outside — and then simply shoved his 250-pound backside into McKinney as if he was going for a rebound. The corner flailed his arms helplessly, disappearing behind a white jersey. And Lohner snagged a touchdown pass,…
INGLEWOOD, Calif. — In a parallel universe, Aaron Gordon wasn’t in the right place at the right time to dunk Nikola Jokic’s airball at the buzzer, because he wasn’t on the court at all. For a moment Saturday, he flirted with an ejection by confronting James Harden during a donnybrook between the Nuggets and Clippers late in the first half of Game 4 at Intuit Dome. Gordon’s hand even made inadvertent contact with the face of Clippers guard Norman Powell in the fray. Fortunately for all involved, including the live audience that was in for an instant classic, nobody was…
Gritty at home. Lazy around halftime. Up and down, but stabilizing. For better or for worse, the Colorado Rapids continue to show exactly who they are. The Seattle Sounders have been one of the more low-key bogey teams for the Rapids in recent years, but the two teams shared the points on Saturday night with a 1-all draw at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. The Rapids are unbeaten in their last three games, but after conceding a late equalizer in Houston a week ago and having a winner called back against Seattle, coach Chris Armas is happy with his team finding…
