The police chief at the Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Pueblo remains on paid leave nearly seven months after he was removed from his position amid an investigation by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Richard McMorran was escorted out of the mental health hospital in late September as the CBI launched a “possible criminal investigation” at the request of the Colorado Department of Human Services. The CBI finished its investigation and presented the case to the 10th Judicial District Attorney’s Office in December so the prosecutors could decide whether to bring criminal charges, CBI spokesman Rob Low said this week.…

A former Mr. Colorado Basketball is taking over at Mullen High School. New Mullen boys basketball coach Chris Crosby. (Provided by Mullen) The Mustangs named Chris Crosby, the 1996 winner of the award at Chatfield, as its next boys basketball coach. Crosby was previously the head coach at Castle View. Crosby takes over for Roosevelt Leslie, who coached for three seasons following a five-year tenure by Hall of Fame coach Bob Caton. From 2007-09 and 2016-22, Crosby served as an assistant coach at Mullen, and the school says his return to Lowell Boulevard “signals continuity and a renewed vision to…

It was a gut-wrenching, gut-churning, gut-punch kind of loss. The Rockies wasted a dramatic ninth-inning rally and fumbled away chances to win in extra innings — not to mention spoiling a superb start from Ryan Feltner —  before losing 4-3 to the Royals in 11 innings Tuesday night. K.C. backup catcher Freddy Fermin singled a line drive to center off Tyler Kinley to score ghost runner Mark Canha for the game-winner at Kaufmann Stadium. The Rockies, 4-18 overall, have lost 11 consecutive road games, with their lone road win coming on March 29 at Tampa Bay, in the second game…

Luca Evans, Broncos beat reporter: At long last, it’s about time we stop talking about what the Broncos might do in this NFL Draft and get to it Thursday. So, fellow gentlemen and Bronco scholars, let’s roundtable some scenarios that have heated up in recent days before the cold of Green Bay. We’ve seen reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, among others, that the Broncos could leap up from their 20th slot. And if the ultra-aggressive Sean Payton does want to swing big to snag a dude, who’s actually worth selling the farm for in this fairly top-light…

The hang-up isn’t that Shedeur Sanders reminds him too much of Shedeur’s dad. It’s that he reminds Dave Syvertsen too much of Russell Wilson. As in an older, Broncos-era Russell Wilson. “He will not outrun NFL defensive ends,” Syvertsen, an analyst with the Ourlads scouting service, told me as we discussed the former CU Buffs quarterback earlier this week. “There’s a slowness to him that I don’t like in the pocket. There’s a lack of twitch.” Ergo, the lack of consensus. Every NFL draft has a wild card, a pivot point, a domino that, once toppled, could send the narrative…

University of Denver goaltender Matt Davis signed a one-year contract with the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda that will begin in the 2025-26 season, DU announced Tuesday. Davis earned Most Outstanding Player honors in the 2024 national championship, making 35 saves and shutting out No. 1-ranked Boston College to help the Pios claim their 10th national title. The 23-year-old from Calgary, Alberta, followed that up with a 29-10-1 record this season for the Pioneers, who made their second straight run to the Frozen Four and their third appearance in four years. His 29 victories in 2024-25 rank second all-time at the…

The Douglas County School District will close three elementary schools next year, becoming the latest K-12 system in metro Denver to shutter buildings because of declining enrollment. The district’s seven-member Board of Education voted unanimously Tuesday evening to approve the closure of three schools: Acres Green Elementary in Littleton and Heritage and Saddle Ranch elementaries in Highlands Ranch. “We know a lot of families are very upset with the district, and we stand ready to support our families and our students with what ever they need moving forward,” Superintendent Erin Kane said. Sixth-graders who attend elementary schools that feed into Highlands…

In his first loss as Nuggets interim coach, David Adelman kept his last timeout in his pocket as time expired on the Nuggets in Game 2 against the Clippers. Trailing 105-102, Denver got a defensive rebound with 11 seconds remaining Monday night. Adelman was wary of the Clippers’ tendency to intentionally foul with a three-point lead, which prevents the opponent from hoisting a game-tying 3-point shot attempt, so he decided the Nuggets’ best chance to generate a clean look was to beat Los Angeles up the floor in transition. The game ended with Christian Braun and Nikola Jokic missing 3s…

No more stashing No. 92 away for a rainy day. Storm clouds are forming near Chopper Circle. “Gabe wanted to get in a groove and take warm-up and get in the room and be part of it,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said of captain Gabriel Landeskog’s activation and subsequent scratch before Monday’s overtime loss at Dallas. “So, that’s why he did that.” I got you, Gabe. No more grooves. No more dry runs. No more mind games. The Avs need to win Game 3. Bednar needs to throw everything he’s got at the Stars on Wednesday night. And everyone. It’s…

Almost every question brought a confession. The Nuggets, bodies sore, heads shaking, struggled with the chilling reality of their unraveling in a 105-102 Game 2 loss to the Clippers. But not with whom to blame. Michael Porter Jr. walked around the locker room apologizing to teammates for his ill-advised outlet pass that led to a turnover and an injured left shoulder. “I am sorry,” he told Aaron Gordon. “This game is on me.” Gordon assured him correctly that it was not. This setback prompted a series of “Are you kidding me’s?” The Nuggets clanked eight free throws. Gordon missed a…
