HOUSTON — Ondřej Lingr made his MLS debut and scored in the sixth minutes of stoppage time for Houston and the Dynamo tied 2-2 with the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night. Lingr, a designated player who signed with Houston (1-4-4) on March 28, dived in front of defender Andreas Maxsø and flicked a header inside the back post into the side-net to cap the scoring. Amine Bassi scored on a one-touch shot, off a pass from Sebastian Kowalczyk, to give the Dynamo a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute. Djordje Mihailovic converted from the penalty spot for Colorado (4-2-3) in…

DALLAS — Mackenzie Blackwood has had some long, busy nights playing on some hockey teams that didn’t win all that often. Now he plays for a very good team that expects to win quite often. It’s just the pressure to win and perform. It’s often a different cadence in his workload. Blackwood was the star in Game 1 for the Colorado Avalanche, making 23 saves Saturday night in a 5-1 win against the Dallas Stars. In his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut, he didn’t face a lot of shots, but he did face plenty of high-quality chances. “There are nights where…

The 2025 NCAA Women’s and Men’s Basketball Tournaments concluded recently — and Geno Auriemma, the legendary University of Connecticut Huskies women’s coach, wasted no time in critiquing the state of the women’s games, as he and others have done for years.   During the tournament, Auriemma uttered a “mic-drop” comment, saying that the women’s tournament experience “sucked” compared to the men’s. Few college basketball figures are as influential and accomplished as Auriemma, who has led the Huskies to 12 national championships — including beating South Carolina for the national title this season — and by achieving a record 250 victories, which…

Manager Bud Black and new interim hitting coach Clint Hurdle made it clear Saturday that there won’t be any bumping of heads or bruised egos in the Rockies’ dugout. During his introductory press conference, Hurdle went out of his way to say that he’s returned to help out Black. “I wanted to make sure I had conversations with Buddy, because I’m here to be Buddy’s hitting coach, and I want to make sure everybody’s understanding of that,” Hurdle said. Black is in his ninth year managing the Rockies. Hurdle led the Rockies for parts of eight seasons, from 2002 to…

In a rockfight that became a barnburner, the Nuggets took Game 1 of their first-round playoff series against the Clippers on Saturday in a 112-110 overtime thriller, behind balanced scoring and some heroics from Russell Westbrook. Let’s break it down. The Nuggets let Russ be Russ, and it paid off: With eight minutes left in Saturday’s back-and-forth thriller, interim head coach David Adelman sent a scuffling Michael Porter Jr. to the bench in favor of Christian Braun — and left much-maligned veteran guard Russell Westbrook on the floor. It’s been a brutal few weeks for Westbrook in Denver, after seeming…

Loco in LoDo. An apt description of what transpired Saturday afternoon at Coors Field. The last team standing was the Washington Nationals, who hung on to win, 12-11. Despite signs of life from their hitherto dormant offense, the Rockies lost their seventh straight. They own a 3-16 record, the worst 19-game start in franchise history. In the ninth, Colorado had the tying run at third in Mickey Moniak, who had tripled home Hunter Goodman. But the Nationals’ Kyle Finnegan struck out Jordan Beck looking to close out the crazy affair. Colorado struck out 17 times, tying a franchise record for…

On the same day the CU football program honored two of its most recent greats, the school announced it would soon honor one from its distant past, too. The university announced Saturday that it will erect a bronze statue of the late Bill McCartney, who led the Buffaloes to their only football national title, outside Folsom Field this fall. The statue will be placed on the east side of the stadium and be unveiled before a to-be-announced game. It will stand 8.5 feet tall atop a granite base. Brian Hanlon of Hanlon Sculpture Studios will design the statue. Hanlon also…

I receive numerous emails about the Rockies. I save the best of those emails, the ones that are thoughtful, reasonable, and not written by social media Neanderthals. From time to time, I check back with the fans who send me those emails to gauge their mood. Their mood is this: I’ve never seen so many avid, longtime Rockies fans this angry. Even worse, I’ve never sensed this much apathy from the fan base as a whole. So, when Clint Hurdle, the new interim hitting coach, met with media members on Saturday morning, I asked what he would say to those…
