CINCINNATI — In recent weeks, the Broncos’ offense has been in a tug-of-war between artistry and mediocrity. In Week 16’s loss to the Chargers, Denver scored 21 points and rushed for 89 yards in the first half, then mustered only six points and 21 rushing yards the rest of the way. On Saturday against the Bengals at Paycor Stadium, the Broncos scored just three points in the opening half before quarterback Bo Nix and the Denver offense came to life with three touchdown passes in the second half.Despite Nix’s resilient effort and wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr.’s spectacular two-touchdown performance, Denver’s…

Today is Sunday, Dec. 29, the 364th day of 2024. There are two days left in the year.Today in history:On Dec. 29, 1890, the Wounded Knee massacre took place in South Dakota as more than 250 Lakota people were killed by U.S. troops sent to disarm them. Also on this date:In 1170, Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury, was slain in Canterbury Cathedral by knights loyal to King Henry II.In 1940, during World War II, Germany dropped incendiary bombs on London, setting off what came to be known as “The Second Great Fire of London.”In 1978, during the Gator Bowl, Ohio…

CINCINNATI — The fans were screaming “M-V-P!” Then they were yelling “O-M-G!”The game was over. Then it wasn’t. It went off the rails. Then it went off the left upright. My word, it was unbelievable. The only thing that made any sense in context with the past eight years was the final result in overtime.Bengals 30, Broncos 24.The Broncos remain wanting, yearning, stewing. They have pedaled the equivalent of the Tour de France the past two weeks on a stationary bike. They are stuck in place, every goal in sight, but agonizingly out of reach. The Broncos still need one victory…

OFFENSE — C A boring grade for an outing that was anything but. Bo Nix and the Broncos turned in several highlight-reel plays and one big-time drive late in regulation to send the game to overtime. But in between the Marvin Mims Jr. insanity was far too much ineffectiveness. They mustered just three first downs over their final three first-half possessions while the Bengals racked up a massive time-of-possession advantage. They went three-and-out twice in overtime, needing only a field goal in both situations. Credit where it’s due: Nix never flinched in the second half of the biggest NFL game…

SAN ANTONIO — Cam Ward opted out of the second half. Ralphie VI opted out during pregame.Turns out the young girl had the right idea all along. The best mascot in America wanted no part of the 2024 Alamo Bowl. At all. The young bison left her pen at a mild, disinterested jog, lollygagged to the 39-yard line and only picked up the pace once her trailer — the portal home, away from all of this — was clearly in sight. If she were a tight end or a linebacker, Coach Prime might kindly suggest her future would be better served elsewhere.Just…

CINCINNATI — Broncos coach Sean Payton opted to play for overtime rather than deciding the game on a two-point conversion late in Denver’s eventual 30-24 overtime loss to Cincinnati on Saturday night. And Broncos players lined up in support of their head coach’s decision.Rookie quarterback Bo Nix threw an improbable touchdown to receiver Marvin Mims Jr. in double coverage on fourth-and-1 to draw the Broncos within 24-23.Nix after the play held up two fingers as if the visitors were about to try to take the lead. The offense stayed on the field. All scoring plays get reviewed by the NFL, but in…
