INDIANAPOLIS — Just this month, Chauncey Billups had a fortuitous opportunity to visit his parents during the NBA season and spend quality time in the city he still fondly considers a home. The Portland Trail Blazers were in Denver for two consecutive games with a Saturday off inbetween. Their coach sure wasn’t complaining. “I’ve got a lot of family I can go see,” he said. “Spend some time with my folks. Pretty cool.” Billups, a Denver native and former Nuggets guard for two stints, was named a finalist for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday night. The current…

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As Kansas City tries to recover after the mass shooting that turned a Super Bowl celebration into chaos, police are working with juvenile prosecutors to determine what happens next with the two young people in custody. A mother of two was killed and 22 people were injured by gunfire Wednesday afternoon, when shots erupted amid the throng of fans gathered at a rally outside Union Station after a parade through the city. Police Chief Stacey Graves said Thursday that victims ranged from ages 8 to 47, with half under 16. Police initially detained three juveniles but…

Alexei Navalny, who crusaded against official corruption and staged massive anti-Kremlin protests as President Vladimir Putin’s fiercest foe, died Friday in the Arctic penal colony where he was serving a 19-year sentence, Russia’s prison agency said. He was 47. The stunning news — less than a month before an election that will give Putin another six years in power — brought renewed criticism and outrage directed at the Kremlin leader who has cracked down on all opposition at home. People laid flowers at monuments to victims of Soviet-era political repressions in Moscow and other cities across Russia, but there was…

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Egypt is building a wall and is leveling land near its border with the Gaza Strip ahead of a planned Israeli offensive targeting the border city of Rafah, satellite images analyzed Friday by The Associated Press show. Egypt, which has not publicly acknowledged the construction, repeatedly has warned Israel not to forcibly expel the more than 1 million displaced Palestinians now in Rafah into its territory while Israeli troops battle the militant group Hamas for a fifth month. Israel’s defense minister said Friday that Israel has “no intention” of pushing Palestinian civilians across the border…

Once again, violence mars celebration Re: “One dead and 22 wounded by gunfire at Chiefs parade,” Feb. 15 news story The mass shooting in Kansas City is as American as apple pie. A city celebrates, and school is canceled in order to celebrate a win. Instead, we have a shooting with kids caught in gunfire even though there is a police presence. When Denver celebrated the Denver Nuggets winning the NBA championship, of course, there had to be a shooting. Are we safe anywhere? Not at a parade, sporting event, movie theater, church, synagogue, or grocery store? Maybe we should…

WASHINGTON — In a single week, the Republican chairs of three House committees announced they would not be seeking reelection, raising questions about whether the chaos that has reigned this Congress is driving out some of the GOP’s top talent. What makes the retirements particularly noteworthy is that none of the chairs were at risk of losing their position due to the term limits that House Republicans impose on their committee leaders. They conceivably could have returned to the same leadership roles in the next Congress, but chose instead to leave and give up jobs they had worked years to…

By DOUG FERGUSON (AP Golf Writer) LOS ANGELES (AP) — Any chance of Tiger Woods breaking par in his first official PGA Tour event in 10 months ended with one swing Thursday and a five-letter word he wasn’t afraid to say. Shank. Woods said his back began to spasm over the final few holes in the Genesis Invitational at Riviera. He said that’s what led to his 8-iron from the middle of the 18th fairway that shot off at a 45-degree angle into the eucalyptus trees. “Oh, definitely I shanked it,” Woods said. “My back was spasming the last couple…
