Michael Malone just lived a parade. He’s headed to Kansas City soon to watch his daughter play in a volleyball tourney there. Stick to sports? After what he saw on television Wednesday afternoon? No way. “I haven’t heard the details, what kind of guns or weapons were used in this case,” the Nuggets coach said before his team tipped off against the Sacramento Kings at Ball Arena on Wednesday night. “People just can’t go buy a gun or an assault rifle and go kill people. I mean, how many more people have to die before we change that?” Too many.…

Thankful for these Colorado defenders of democracy Re: “Vote to impeach Mayorkas fails, thwarted by Buck, defections,” Feb. 7 news story Ken Buck bucked the herd and voted against the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. He knew that was not the answer to solving the immigration problem and a waste of taxpayer time and money. After decades of poor policy, new bipartisan Senate policies, now “dead,” might have helped. We will never know. The Republican congressional sheep and puppets chose to help Donald Trump use immigration as a political stumping tool instead. How is this for the people?…

Since 1962, the Mount Evans Hill Climb ranked as one of Colorado’s highest and most iconic endurance events. Leather-lunged cyclists pedaled 27 miles from Idaho Springs to a finish line atop one of Colorado’s most majestic fourteeners, climbing more than 6,700 feet. The 14,265-foot peak, which had been named for 1860s-era territorial governor John Evans, was renamed last year, though, because of Evans’ involvement in the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864. As a result, the event is now called the Blue Sky Hill Climb. On race day, the road to the summit — the highest paved road in North America…

Work to repair and improve the iconic Hanging Lake Trail in Glenwood Canyon will impact opportunities for hikers to enjoy it this summer, officials of the White River National Forest say. When forest officials reopened the trail in 2022 following severe damage from mudslides the previous summer, they announced plans to make permanent long-term improvements intended to modernize the trail and make it less susceptible to future damage from flash flood events. Construction is expected to happen this spring and continue through the summer. Trail closures are expected, but officials say it’s too soon to offer specifics. “We will know…

Four years after an overhaul of Colorado’s oil and gas rules that was meant to cool conflicts over drilling, a draft bill that would phase out new permits for wells is running up the temperature. Fanning the heat even more are ballot proposals that could restrict efforts to boost renewable energy. Gov. Jared Polis said he hoped a law approved in 2019 would end the state’s “oil and gas wars” by tightening regulations and putting protection of public health and the environment front and center. But growing concerns about climate change and Colorado’s failure to meet federal air quality standards…

Tommy Lee wanted to take advantage of Hop Alley’s remodel last year and open a “little restaurant within a restaurant,” he said. On Thursday Feb. 15, the owner of Hop Alley, as well as Uncle ramen, is debuting a six-seat chef’s counter within the hip Asian restaurant at 3500 Larimer St. in RiNo. “This will be completely unrelated to Hop Alley,” Lee said. “You won’t be able to get the chef’s counter dishes in the restaurant or the Hop Alley dishes at the counter. We wanted to offer another creative outlet for our team, since they have tons of ideas…

Colorado would ban the sale, transfer and importation of so-called assault weapons under a bill introduced Tuesday in the state House. The measure, HB24-1292, is similar to legislation that a House committee killed last spring in its first hearing, but this year’s version may have better chances. The new bill would define assault weapons as including semi-automatic rifles and pistols with fixed large-capacity magazines or the ability to accept detachable magazines, along with several other types of high-powered firearms. It would not ban the possession of the weapons but would prohibit the “manufacturing, importing, purchasing, selling, offering to sell or…

BAMBERG, S.C. — Nikki Haley made a campaign stop Tuesday in her hometown of Bamberg, a reliably Democratic rural town that she has described as instrumental to the values that guide her presidential bid, as well as a place where she and her family experienced discrimination. “It’s always a great day in South Carolina when I can come home,” Haley said to a crowd of several dozen gathered at a downtown park. Haley’s hometown was her first stop as she barnstormed across the state in the closing days ahead of South Carolina’s Feb. 24 primary, aiming to cut into Donald…

SANTA FE, N.M. — The scheduled trial next week of a movie weapons supervisor in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer by Alec Baldwin may hinge on an enduring mystery: How did live ammunition find its way onto the set of a film set where it was expressly prohibited? Investigators recovered six live rounds of ammunition from a box, a bandolier, a gun belt and other locations on the set of the Western movie “Rust,” including the round that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and wounded director Joel Souza. Special prosecutors say they’ll present “substantial evidence” at the trial that movie…

NEW YORK — Donald Trump is calling for a shakeup at the highest levels of the Republican National Committee. And party leaders are taking it very seriously. To be clear, this is not normal. Trump has yet to secure the GOP’s presidential nomination and just last week, he and current Chair Ronna McDaniel privately agreed that no major changes would take place until after South Carolina’s Feb. 24 primary. But that didn’t stop Trump from announcing Monday on social media that he wants McDaniel to be replaced by Michael Whatley, the North Carolina GOP chairman. The new co-chair, Trump said,…
