Supporters of a Denver City Council measure that would limit the city’s ability to clear homeless encampments in sub-freezing weather fell short Monday in their attempt to override Mayor Mike Johnston’s veto of the ordinance changes. No 32-degree temperature threshold will be added to Denver’s municipal code. The council voted 7-6 to override Johnston’s rejection of what has come to be known as the “freezing sweeps” bill. That was the same margin by which the bill originally passed on Jan. 29. But it takes a nine-vote supermajority for the 13-member council to override a mayoral veto. The bill’s sponsors and…

Sarah McKenzie is among Colorado’s most respected painters, and she earned that reputation through a most unique body of work: She paints architecture. McKenzie is known — and has exhibited — far and wide for her precision renderings of built spaces, like residences, commercial structures, construction sites, abandoned factories and more. A few years ago, she began a series capturing exhibition spaces, museums and galleries much like the ones that show her own art. Like nearly all of her work, the paintings are hyper-realistic, and without humans present, yet they still have a soft and personal quality that makes them…

SUNRISE, Fla. — Before the Colorado Avalanche went searching for an end to a three-game losing skid Saturday night in South Florida, Ryan Johansen spoke at length about his own personal quest to salvage what has been a frustrating season to date. Neither the Avs nor their first-year veteran center found the answers they were looking for at Amerant Arena. It was a long night for the entire team, with plenty of blame to go around in a 4-0 loss to the Florida Panthers. It was also another long night for Johansen, who got stuck on the ice without a…

Dear Amy: My husband has been irritable, tense, short-tempered and basically taking things out on me and our 16-year-old son. I confided in my 39-year-old stepson (my husband’s son) and let him know that I was worried about his father regarding stress and potentially some depression issues. I did mention that we were not getting along well and suggested that perhaps the son could give his father a break and take him away from the stress of the family business. The getaway ended up being a trip to Vegas which included drinking, gambling and yes, strip joints. This of course…
