TORONTO — Connor McDavid likened the 2024 NHL All-Star weekend to a reunion for one of the most exciting international hockey teams ever assembled. McDavid was talking about Team North America, one of the two league-made entries added to the 2016 World Cup of Hockey. It was a group of U-24 players from the United States and Canada, and it was a window into the sport’s future. Among players who were NHL All-Stars this season, that team included McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon, Auston Matthews, Connor Hellebuyck, Morgan Rielly, J.T. Miller and Vincent Trochek. McDavid referenced that team because the NHL announced…

By MICHELLE L. PRICE, MEG KINNARD and JAMES POLLARD (Associated Press) CONWAY, S.C. (AP) — With two weeks to go before the South Carolina Republican primary, Nikki Haley is trying to challenge Donald Trump on her home turf while the former president tries to quash his last major rival for the nomination. Trump, turning his campaign focus to the southern state days after an easy victory in Nevada, revved up a huge crowd of supporters at a Saturday afternoon rally in Conway, near Myrtle Beach, by touting his time in office, repeating his false claims that the 2020 election he…

FORT COLLINS — With former coach Tim Miles on the opposing team’s bench, the Colorado State men’s basketball team won its fourth game in a row Friday, defeating San Jose State, 66-47, at Moby Arena. CSU improved to 19-5 overall and 7-4 in the Mountain West Conference. Miles and the Spartans fell to 8-16 and 1-10 in the MW. “Another good win for our guys tonight, kind of a workman-like performance I thought,” CSU head coach Niko Medved said. “Defensively, we were pretty good for most of the night. We got a little choppy offensively in the second half but…

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Without two of their best 3-point shooters, the Nuggets were naturally going to have trouble keeping up with the Kings if they didn’t defend the perimeter well Friday night. Sacramento made 17 of 34 shots beyond the arc, and the Nuggets lost a 135-106 laugher to the Kings at Golden 1 Center, missing an opportunity to take sole possession of first place in the Western Conference. Six Kings scored at least a dozen points, while Denver (36-17) turned it over 20 times with just 26 assists. Michael Porter Jr. (right knee tendinopathy) and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (right hamstring…

Moon Alert: After 9 a.m. EST today (6 a.m. PST), there are no restrictions to shopping or important decisions. The Moon is in Pisces. Happy Birthday for Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024: You are goal-oriented because you like approval and recognition. You have amazing drive to go after what you want. This is a slower-paced year. SUNRISE, Fla. — The Colorado Avalanche do not lack for offense most nights, a statement that is backed up by the club leading the NHL in both goals and goals per game one month from the trade deadline. Possessing one of the top two scoring defensemen, two of the top six forwards and another on pace to shatter personal bests in offensive output is one of the best foundations in the sport. But this team expects to win a championship, so every nit can and will be picked. And one ongoing concern for the entire 2023-24 season has been whether…

Beat writer Bennett Durando opens up the Nuggets Mailbag periodically during the season. Pose a Nuggets- or NBA- related question here. As much as it pains us to think poorly of a native son and fellow Jayhawk, we wonder if the Christian Braun hype leading into this season was overly optimistic. We were as pumped as everyone else after his performance vs. Miami, but those highlight moments aside, last year’s season-long performance didn’t indicate to us that he was ready to impact this year’s team in the ways some hoped. What are your thoughts on his season so far? Of the…

Some Denver Motor Vehicle offices will close for a week at a time, recreation centers will reduce their hours and the parks department will slash spring recreational programming by 25% to help offset the fast-rising costs of sheltering migrants in the city. Efforts to trim city spending will be visible in other small ways. too. Come planting season, the city will leave its flower beds bare. Denver Mayor Mike Johnston announced the first round of budget cuts at a news conference Friday morning — changes that will add up to $5 million in budget savings this year, he said. But…
