RALEIGH, N.C. — This one had a few more quirks, but for the third time in three tries since the All-Star break, the not bad, but far-from-optimal version of the Colorado Avalanche proved to be not enough against one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference. Martin Necas scored a natural hat trick on three of Carolina’s first four shots, and the Hurricanes sent the Avs to their third straight loss with a 5-2 victory at PNC Arena. The biggest problem since the break is now officially the power play. Colorado converted 35% of its chances in the final…

A Democratic state lawmaker voluntarily killed her own bill Thursday over a wave of criticism –and some threats — sparked by the proposal to require Colorado pet owners to register their animals and pay fees. The bill, HB24-1163, would have required pet owners to pay a small, per-animal annual fee to support shelters across the state. The fee component attracted attention and drew criticism on social media, particularly from conservative commentators. The blowback prompted Rep. Regina English, the bill’s sponsor and a Colorado Springs Democrat, to request that the bill be shelved at a special Thursday morning meeting of the…

The Broncos began their season ticket renewal process Thursday morning with an email to ticket-holders from president Damani Leech, which acknowledged a price increase that for most will be less than last year’s. The average price of a season ticket is rising by 7.9%, according to data from the team, in line with NFL averages. It is a more modest bump than last year, when price increases started around 7% and averaged about 13%. In the letter to season-ticket holders, Leech thanked fans for their support and credited them with helping Denver to win five of its six final home…

The city of Brighton is about to get a little greener. This week, the Brighton City Council voted 7-2 to allow recreational marijuana shops for the first time. The council-approved ordinance allows for the establishment of four stores, with two of the licenses reserved for social equity applicants. Applications open March 1. This will be the first time Brighton, which is located primarily in Adams County, has ever allowed cannabis businesses within city limits, despite the fact that recreational weed has been legal in Colorado for a decade and medical marijuana has been legal since 2000. The city still prohibits…

It’s the time of year when parents and guardians across Denver can enter their students’ names into a school choice lottery to attend some of the best schools in the state. Denver Public Schools’ enrollment window for school choice opened on Jan. 11 and closes at 4 p.m. on Feb. 12. The model is remarkable. DPS is one of the only districts in the nation that offers an equal admission chance for some seats in almost every school with a single application. But unlike in years past, parents are missing key information to help them navigate the more than 200…

Wyatt Academy, one of Denver’s oldest charter schools, will likely close at the end of this school year, the latest casualty of declining enrollment and fewer per-pupil dollars. Wyatt has told families to find new schools for their children, but its board hasn’t yet taken a final vote to close. The likely closure of Wyatt follows a pattern of single-site charter schools shutting their doors in Denver Public Schools, once one of the most charter-friendly districts in the nation. But instead of simply going dark, Wyatt leaders say they’ve found a way to continue the 25-year-old elementary school’s legacy in…

By PAT GRAHAM (AP Sports Writer) American ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin will skip giant slalom and slalom races this weekend in Andorra to give her knee more time to mend.
