Jim Robbins | KFF Health News (TNS) Each fall, millions of hunters across North America make their way into forests and grasslands to kill deer. Over the winter, people chow down on the venison steaks, sausage, and burgers made from the animals. These hunters, however, are not just on the front lines of an American tradition. Infectious disease researchers say they are also on the front lines of what could be a serious threat to public health: chronic wasting disease. The neurological disease, which is contagious, rapidly spreading, and always fatal, is caused by misfolded proteins called prions. It currently…
Colorado civil rights attorney Kevin Williams died this week after 26 years of fighting to improve the lives of people with disabilities. He was 57. Williams died Tuesday after a short illness, according to colleagues at the Denver-based Colorado Cross-Disability Coalition, where he launched the legal program in 1997 upon graduation from law school. A quadriplegic paralyzed from his chest down following a car crash at age 19, Williams steadily increased access for disabled people by filing lawsuits — pressing for enforcement under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act, the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act and the Fair Housing Act.…
Does abortion initiative prevent “real freedom of choice?” Re: “Put abortion rights in the Colorado Constitution,” Jan. 28 commentary Wait. Stop. Don’t sign ballot Initiative 89 to “Put abortion rights in the Colorado Constitution.” This is not a ballot initiative about something inanimate, such as gas exploration or gaming. It’s not a ballot initiative that warrants a casual signature as you walk out of your local grocery store. It is imperative that registered voters give this measure a great deal of scrutiny. The abortion issue is tearing this country apart. It is an emotional issue with heart-wrenching anecdotal stories on…

Randy Gradishar waited 35 years to receive one of the greatest honors in professional football. That wait ended when the former Broncos linebacker was officially elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which was announced during the 13th annual NFL Honors in Las Vegas on Thursday night. Gradishar is a part of the 2024 class that includes Dwight Freeney, Andre Johnson, Patrick Willis, Steve McMichael, Devin Hester and Julius Peppers. The Broncos’ offseason could mirror a 2,000-piece puzzle. Head coach Sean Payton and general manager George Paton will have to spend an extensive amount of time putting the right pieces in place to field a competitive roster while facing steep salary cap limitations in 2024. Denver’s offense will require a thorough look for obvious reasons. While the Broncos improved from their lackluster effort in 2022, they didn’t move mountains under Payton, finishing 26th in total yards per game (298.4) and 19th in points per game (21). The team’s play-caller admitted as much when addressing reporters last month. “I would say…

The Nuggets won their seventh consecutive game against the Los Angeles Lakers, 114-106, on Thursday night at Crypto.com Arena, where Kobe Bryant was honored pregame with a freshly unveiled statue. Here are three observations as Denver (36-16) moved into a two-way tie for first place in the Western Conference with Minnesota. Nuggets are different in clutch time The Lakers, flaws and all, are a pretty good clutch team. Their eight wins in games decided by three points or less are the most in the NBA. But the Nuggets boast the No. 1 clutch defense in the league, and it showed…
