The first migrant families are scheduled to move into temporary housing in the Mullen Home in the West Highlands at the end of this week after the Denver City Council approved a deal between the city and the Archdiocese of Denver. The city will lease the former assisted living facility at 3629 W. 29th Ave., which has 75 apartment units, until the end of next year. Denver plans to use about 30 of the units initially and may increase that number after operations and other services are set up, officials said. Part of the agreement also includes a land swap…
A South Park Hill home that the current owner wants to demolish, but that some neighbors want to see preserved, is now being marketed for sale. A listing for the 4,500-square-foot home on 0.43 acres at 5013 E. Montview Ave. went live on Zillow last week with a $2.73 million asking price. Owners Mark and Marianne Rinehart purchased the home on 0.43 acres through a trust for $2.5 million in September 2022, records show. They want to demolish the structure and build a larger single-family home, according to documents submitted to the city. In November, however, three women who live…
One of the most influential youth soccer coaches in the country is leaving the Centennial State for the Windy City. Lorne Donaldson, president of Real Colorado and the former Jamaica head coach who famously helped lead the Reggae Girlz to an unlikely Round of 16 berth at this summer’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, was named head coach of the NWSL’s Chicago Red Stars on Wednesday. Donaldson, 68, takes over a team that has been in flux over the last few seasons, despite reaching the NWSL Championship in 2021. It’s only fitting given his track record of developing some of the…
National signing day arrived in Colorado on Wednesday and brought with it zero drama — as well as a familiar theme. Each of the state’s most coveted recruits stayed true to verbal commitments made months ago, with every last one of them signing letters of intent with schools outside the Centennial State. The state’s top-rated Class of 2024 prep prospect, three-star offensive lineman Gage Ginther out of Fossil Ridge, was among them. In fact, he’d already joined his new team at Tennessee before the early signing period for senior high school football recruits began Wednesday. Ginther’s pledge to the Volunteers…
Colorado has its first confirmed case of measles in four years, and unvaccinated people who visited Denver International Airport or the Aurora campus of Children’s Hospital Colorado may need to look out for symptoms. Vaccination is highly effective, so people who completed the sequence of the measles, mumps and rubella shot don’t need to worry, according to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. In some cases, giving the shot to an unvaccinated person within 72 hours of exposure can prevent them from getting sick. While most people recover from measles without complications, it can cause brain damage or…
Last spring, Fountain-Fort Carson left tackle Lincoln Fa’apouli Jr. had five Division I scholarship offers, including one to play Power 5 football at Kansas. Fast-forward to the end of his senior season, and Fa’apouli’s seen his scholarship pool dry up. Those Division I offers? Gone, he’s been told, because of the trickle-down consequences of the college transfer portal. Now, the 6-foot-5, 320-pounder who helped pave the way for one of Colorado’s top rushing attacks this fall is down to one Division II offer, from CSU-Pueblo. “I did try to commit to a few of those (Division I) colleges recently, but…
BOULDER — Max Parrott couldn’t believe all the love he was getting from this big, proud CU Buff, a first-time Power 5 head coach, a man driven like a snowplow to make a flagging football program relevant again. The catch? That program was Purdue. And the big, proud Buff in question was former CU star Ryan Walters, who was hired by the Boilermakers about a week after Deion Sanders was introduced as the new face at Walters’ old stomping grounds. “(Purdue) came out and they showed me so much love,” said the 6-foot-4, 273-pound Cherry Creek lineman, rated in the…
Donald Trump cannot appear on the state’s primary ballot, the Colorado Supreme Court ruled Tuesday in a legal challenge that has gained national notice as the former president seeks the 2024 Republican nomination. The Supreme Court, in a 4-3 opinion, found that Trump is barred under a provision of the 14th Amendment that prohibits people who engaged in insurrection from running for office, based on his actions surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, U.S. Capitol breach and riot by his supporters. “We conclude that because President Trump is disqualified from holding the office of President under Section Three (of the 14th…
Denver Mayor Mike Johnston said Tuesday that he and staff members had conversations only in recent days about how the administration has been reporting progress — and numbers — in an online dashboard for his House 1,000 homeless sheltering effort. The mayor’s office has come under fire in the last week for counting people moved indoors for any length of time rather than only those who have been sheltered for at least 14 days. That is the threshold Johnston and his team had said they would use to report progress toward their goal of moving 1,000 people off the streets…
The Colorado Rapids selected their players in Tuesday’s 2024 Major League Soccer SuperDraft with the mindset that it was a once-in-a-burgundy-and-blue-moon opportunity. After much wheeling and dealing, the draft ended with three of the first five picks in Colorado colors. Armed with advantageous rule changes and a clear strategy, Colorado had three picks in the top 15 for the first time since 2000. It first selected Duke sophomore midfielder Wayne Frederick with the No. 2 overall pick, added Generation Adidas striker Kimani Stewart-Baynes out of Maryland at No. 4, and later sent $250,000 in 2024 general allocation money (GAM) to…
