Russell Wilson walked into a trap he had no chance of avoiding. On Denver’s first offensive drive in Saturday’s 42-17 loss to the Detroit Lions, the Broncos starting quarterback went to the right on a naked bootleg when safety Ifeatu Melifonwu flew in unblocked for the strip sack. Defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs recovered the ball and ran 33 yards into Broncos territory. While the Lions didn’t take advantage of the turnover, Melifonwu’s sack established the ultra-aggressive approach the Detroit defense used throughout the game, as it recorded 22 pressures and two sacks, according to Pro Football Focus. “(The Lions) did…
A mule deer buck attacked a 67-year-old woman outside her front door Saturday, goring the woman’s legs with its antlers, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said. The Silver Cliff resident managed to get back inside her home to call for help and was taken to a hospital in Pueblo, according to a Sunday news release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. Silver Cliff is a small town about 55 miles west of Pueblo in the Wet Mountain Valley, located between the Sangre de Cristo Mountains and Wet Mountains. “A wildlife officer went to investigate and found a bird feeder in the yard,”…
Sean Payton said Monday that he still expects tight end Greg Dulcich to play at some point in the final three weeks of the regular season. The Broncos head coach said Dulcich’s absence from practice last Thursday and Saturday’s loss at the Detroit Lions was unrelated to a hamstring injury that led to two stints on injured reserve. The second-year tight end was dealing with swelling and soreness in his foot after he was a full participant at Wednesday’s practice — his first day back from the IR. “I’m anxious to see how he does this week,” Payton said. With…
Aurora fire crews on Monday continued to battle the five-alarm construction fire that has shut down Colfax Avenue and Peoria Street for more than two days. As of 11:30 a.m. Monday, firefighters from six different agencies were working to douse the remaining hot spots, officials said, though physical flames were no longer visible outside the structure. The multi-agency operation includes crews from the Denver Fire Department, South Adams Fire, South Metro Fire Rescue, Sable Altura Fire and the Rattlesnake Fire Protection District, Aurora Fire Rescue spokesperson Dawn Small said. But the fire crews remain unable to enter the site, said…
By NICOLE WINFIELD and DAVID CRARY (Associated Press) ROME (AP) — Pope Francis formally approved letting Catholic priests bless same-sex couples, the Vatican announced Monday, a radical shift in policy that aimed at making the church more inclusive while maintaining its strict ban on gay marriage. But while the Vatican statement was heralded by some as a step toward breaking down discrimination in the Catholic Church, some LGBTQ+ advocates warned it underscored the church’s idea that gay couples remain inferior to heterosexual partnerships. The document from the Vatican’s doctrine office elaborates on a letter Francis sent to two conservative cardinals…
The Broomfield Police Department arrested one man in connection with a homicide in Broomfield’s Anthem neighborhood, the department stated in a release Monday morning. According to the release, 43-year-old Daniel Krug was arrested Saturday night and charged with first-degree murder. Krug is being held in the Broomfield County Jail without bond. Broomfield Police were called in for a welfare check at a home in the 3100 block of Promontory Loop just before 1 p.m. on Thursday, according to a social media post by the department. When officers arrived, they found a 43-year-old woman deceased inside. The woman will be identified…
With the offensive line rebuilt, head coach Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes are focusing on some other areas of the roster to upgrade. On Sunday, the Buffs landed three former four-star recruits as transfers, as well as more depth at quarterback. Defensive end Quency Wiggins (formerly of LSU), defensive tackle Anquin Barnes (Alabama), receiver Cordale Russell (TCU) and quarterback Walter Taylor (Vanderbilt) all announced their intentions to transfer to Colorado. Wiggins appeared in nine games during his two seasons with LSU, recording seven tackles and a tackle for loss. A four-star recruit coming out of Madison Prep Academy in…
By BRENDAN FARRINGTON (Associated Press) TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The Republican Party of Florida suspended Chairman Christian Ziegler and demanded his resignation during an emergency meeting Sunday, adding to calls by Gov. Ron DeSantis and other top officials for him to step down as police investigate a rape accusation against him. Ziegler is accused of raping a woman with whom he and his wife, Moms for Liberty co-founder Bridget Ziegler, had a prior consensual sexual relationship, according to police records. “Christian Ziegler has engaged in conduct that renders him unfit for the office,” the party’s motion to censure Ziegler said,…
By LISA MASCARO and STEPHEN GROVES (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — Time slipping, White House and Senate negotiators struggled Sunday to reach a U.S. border security deal that would unlock President Joe Biden’s request for billions of dollars worth of military aid for Ukraine and other national security needs before senators leave town for the holiday recess. The Biden administration, which is becoming more deeply involved in the talks, is facing pressure from all sides over any deal. Negotiators insist they are making progress, but a hoped-for framework did not emerge. Republican leaders signaled that without bill text, an upcoming…
The second game of this season was one of the weirdest for the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs went to San Jose, suffocated the Sharks from start to finish, and still needed a shootout goal to eek by the rebuilding club. Colorado did not dominate San Jose the same way in the second matchup, but the Avalanche did cruise to a 6-2 win at Ball Arena that featured far less tension about the outcome. Nathan MacKinnon had two goal and two assists while matching the longest point streak of his career at 15 games, and the power play struck twice for…
